Gregory McKernan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 20, 2024.
Gregory Lee McKernan, known affectionately as Greg, passed away on September 17, 2024, in Tacoma, WA. Born on November 28, 1952, in Clear Lake, South Dakota. Greg was a devoted father and husband and left our presence too soon.

Greg graduated from Lincoln High School before joining the Air Force, serving from 1972 to 1976. His service included two tours in Guam, concluding his duty at Fairchild AFB in Spokane, WA where he met and married Donna on May 28, 1977. Post-military, Greg embarked on a robust career path, starting with a four-year apprenticeship in Pipe Fitting for Local 82. He then dedicated 12 years to Tacoma Boat and another 5 years as a steam fitter. Greg eventually shifted gears to a mechanical engineer at the Washington State Old Soldiers Home, later moving to Tacoma General Hospital where he worked for 15 years until retirement, though he never truly stopped working, picking up shifts until his last days.

A man of many interests, Greg had a profound love for music-whether it was playing his guitar, dancing, or adding to his extensive record collection. His 1967 Ford Bronco was a testament to his tinkering skills, alongside a cherished collection of pocket knives and the metalwork he crafted with pride. Greg's charisma and wit made him a beloved figure, easily engaging with anyone he met, leaving a lasting impression with his warmth and humor.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Donna McKernan; his children, Aaron McKernan and his wife Tausha, Micheal McKernan, and Corinne McKernan and her fiancé Daniel Baxter; five grandchildren, Aaron Jackson, Luke Robert, Boston Lee, Eva Rachelle, Brinnley Mae; and his brothers, James and Michael McKernan.

A gathering to honor and celebrate Greg's life will be held at Titlow Lodge, 8425 6th Ave, Tacoma, WA 98465 from 2 PM to 6 PM on October 25, 2024. His legacy of kindness, craftsmanship, and family will be remembered by all who knew him.

That man made the most amazing fried chicken and was always up for a game of cribbage, I will remember him always smiling and brightening up any room he entered. He was my uncle and I was lucky to have spent the time I did with him.
