Gregory Smith Obituary

Published by Connecticut Post & Danbury News Times & The Hour on Apr. 6, 2023.
Gregory D. Smith
July 25, 1968 - March 31, 2023
It is with great sadness that the family of Gregory D. Smith, 54, of Norwalk announces his unexpected passing on March 31, 2023. Greg was born on July 25, 1968, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, to Sandra and Robert Smith. He was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School, Class of 1986 and Bentley University of Waltham, Massachusetts, Class of 1991. President and CEO of Maplewood Senior Living and Inspir, a leader in the senior housing industry since 2006, Greg's mission was to "Redefine expectations for the later years in life by offering senior living communities that provide the very best hospitality, care and lifestyle". Greg leaves behind a legacy that remains committed to providing its signature standard of excellence to all current and future residents.
Greg chaired the board of directors for Ability Beyond and was on the board of directors for the Alzheimer's Association of Connecticut, Danbury Hospital, and Norwalk Hospital. Greg was known for his philanthropy, supporting various projects and campaigns at Nuvance Health, including the Andrew Cruz Endowed Chair in Palliative Care, which was established in memory of his cousin, and the neonatal center and pediatric emergency room at Danbury Hospital.
Greg was most at peace when surrounded by nature and family. He loved his home by the ocean that was always filled with natural light and never without a fresh arrangement of flowers. When he needed to get away, he found solace in vacationing with his family in Turks and Caicos, or staying at the family home in Sandgate, Vermont. Most of all, Greg loved being surrounded by his seven children, who he described as his entire world.
Greg, and his family and friends, also took great pride in his achievements, both personally and professionally. Greg was very proud of his 5th degree black belt and extremely dedicated to his craft, even training in China with the Shaolin monks.
Greg is survived by his mother and father, Sandra and Robert Smith; his twin brother, Christopher Smith; his sister, Hollee Chontos; his fiancée, Carine Bonnist; his children, Hunter, Hayden, Cruz, John Robert, Bella, Sage, and Dakota; his paternal Uncle David and Aunt Karen Smith; his maternal Uncle Philip and Aunt Sandy Cruz; his nephews, Chase, Cole, Trevor Smith, and Colin Chontos, as well as several cousins, extended family, and countless friends and colleagues. Greg was predeceased by his paternal grandparents Ruth and Donald Smith and his maternal grandparents Liuntina and Custodio Cruz.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Ability Beyond, Alzheimer's Association of Connecticut, and the Andrew Cruz Endowed Chair in Palliative Care. A Mass for Greg will be held at Saint Rose of Lima Church in Newtown, CT on Saturday, April 15th at 10AM, immediately followed by a celebration of Greg's life at Shorehaven Country Club in Norwalk, CT.
"It's about leaving a legacy, how you can help make a difference. That's at the crux of my getting into senior housing - the opportunity to profoundly change a person's life and those of their family" - Gregory D. Smith.

Dear Smith Family,
I recently heard about Greg's passing, and my heart goes out to all of you. I grew up with Greg and Chris in the 70's/80's back in Pittsfield - playing sports, skiing, hanging at the CYC and swimming at the house. Unfortunately, Greg and I lost contact after living together back in our college days. Greg taught me about honesty and integrity, and was such an awesome young man. I will never forget how his smile could brighten even the darkest of days! I knew Greg was destined for great things, and the lives he touched is a testament to who he was. I am blessed to have known him, and he will be missed by so many. As the time passes, my hope is that the pain you feel lessens, and your memories brighten.

Dear Smith Family
In a previous lifetime I was blessed with the opportunity to spend many years with Greg and your beautiful family. Bob, Sandy, Hollie, Chris, Sue, and I think it was Winston your Bassett Hound. My heart bleeds for your family. I can´t imagine the loss of a child. May God protect and walk you through each day. I don´t think any of us realize what an impact we have in the people we touch throughout our lives. My time with Greg and your family opened an opportunity for me to soar in my education and my profession. I have all of you to thank for this. All of you must have been so incredibly proud of him. I am sure he will protect all of you on this earth and just know we do see each other again. May peace and love surround all of you each and every day.
Sincerely
Michele Cosentino DiNapoli

The East Norwalk Neighborhood Association Board extends our sympathy to the family, friends, colleagues and clients of Mr. Smith. A class act and a standout to us as an entrepreneur and developer in East Norwalk who sincerely reached out to our neighborhood when he wanted to convert Fitch School to the beautiful Maplewood at Strawberry Hill we see today. ENNA still holds him up as a shining example of respectful, complimentary industry & development. He cared, listened, respected, empathized, responded, collaborated, adjusted, committed, and kept his promises. A dream, the vision and job very well done. So young, but he clearly made a lasting difference and impression - RIP Greg.

Dearest Sandi and Bob and your whole family.....our hearts break for you but heaven has a new angel that had the biggest heart....he looked out for seniors and babies....what could be better than that? Prayers and hugs to all of you... and a bluebird sky overlooking the best ski day for Greg and a huge land locked salmon jumping right into his boat! Love the Ross family

My sincere condolences to the Smith family. I did not know Greg personally, but he was held in high regard by me and his colleagues in the senior housing industry and viewed as a true visionary. May he rest is peace.
