Gregory Alan Smith

Scarborough - Gregory Alan Smith, aged 78, passed away on December 6, 2025, in Scarborough, Maine at the Maine Veterans Home. Born on September 16, 1947, he was a cherished member of his community and a beloved figure within his family.

Gregory's life was marked by his dedicated service to his country. He served in the United States Air Force from 1966 to 1970, followed by a tenure with the Maine Air National Guard until 1974. His commitment continued in his civilian life, where he was known for his leadership as the American Legion Post Commander at Post 168 in Portland, Maine.

Professionally, Gregory was a respected Master Plumber. He worked at Johnson and Jordan Mechanical Contractors from 1991 until his retirement in 2020, where he was the foreman of numerous significant projects in the greater Portland area. His expertise and diligence set a high standard in his field.

Gregory's educational journey began at Houlton Elementary School in Maine, continued at Clearview Regional High School in New Jersey, and culminated at the University of Maine, Orono, where he studied Forestry. His love for nature was evident not only in his academic pursuits but also in his hobbies. He was an avid birdwatcher, fly fisherman, and enjoyed painting and photography. His hiking trips in the Colorado Rockies and the Appalachian Trail with his daughter and grandchildren were among his cherished moments, as were the times spent in his garden and with his beloved dogs, Penny and Sammi.

He leaves behind a loving family: his daughter Karissa Smith; grandchildren Emily Tighe and LTJG Christopher Vazquez USN ; siblings Shelley Alfiero, Lorraine Smith-Armstrong, Jennifer Merrill, and Matthew Smith. Gregory was preceded in death by his father, Robert Smith; mother, Judith Smith-Storer; and his wife, Sandra Smith.

Details regarding the memorial service will be announced later, planned for the summer months to allow all family members to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Dementia Society of America in Gregory's memory. His legacy of love, service, and community engagement will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
