Griffin Jones Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 31, 2010.
Griffin L. Jones was ushered into the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ, whom he loved and served faithfully, on December 20, 2010. He was born December 7, 1925, in Slaton, Texas, and is survived by his wife of 63 years, Melvis Corzine Jones. Together, they have invested 53 years teaching Sunday School classes, influencing thousands of children with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In addition, "Brother Jones" served in independent, fundamental Baptist churches as an ordained deacon and personally led many people to receive Christ as their Savior. He loved his nation and is a part of America's "greatest generation," having served in the U.S. Navy for 33 months in the South Pacific during World War 2. He achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer as a plane captain on the aircraft carrier, U.S.S. Shipley Bay. He earned a Master's Degree from Trinity University and worked as a chemist and chemical engineer for the United States Civil Service for just over 40 years, primarily at Kelly AFB. He is preceded in death by his parents, Willie Day and Mary Moffitt Jones, as well as brothers Jessie and George Jones, and sisters, Beulah Stanley, Amber Roberts, Amy Bischel, and Gail Meyers. He is survived by his daughter, Cathy Jones Elliott and husband Doug; son, Dr. Griffin G. Jones and wife, Donna; grandchildren, Ryon Elliott and Erin Elliott Howard , Shawn Jones Crane and Cherith Jones, and great-grandaughter, Eliana Crane; sisters, Jane Lopez and Hazel Link; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 2, 2011, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and a memorial service on Monday, January 3, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Huisache Avenue Baptist Church. Arrangements under the direction of SUNSET NORTHWEST FUNERAL HOME, San Antonio, TX. Expressions of sympathy can be made at www.sunsetnwchapel.com

One of God's greatest servants. Our heart is saddened but praise God for his faith and life for Jesus Christ. His labour lives on through many he influenced. Our love and prayers are with you Mrs. Jones.

What a wonderful testimony of a man who loved and served God, country and family. We never had the privilege of meeting and spending time with your loved one. His service to others will leave his memories carved into the hearts of many. I now know why his son, our pastor, Griff is the great servant, shepherd and teacher that he is. We are very sorry for the loss of your loved one. Our prayers are with all of you at this difficult and sad time.

A true faithful servant of Holy God...a Godly man who walked in quiet dignity. There was no question of your love for our Lord and His work... this was your life's testimony and you spoke it well. Thank you Bro. Jones for a life lived to His glory. Mine is a grateful heart.
My deepest sympathy to the entire family...what a day when we all gather in that blessed land of no more sorrow, pain, nor death...until then I pray God comfort and keep you in His unseen hand.

Love to you,

He must have been a wonderful man, and faithful servant of his Lord. His Christian values and legacy continue through the life and work of his son, Dr. Griffin Jones - our pastor. Our prayers and support are with the family, and we all hope you know that our arms are around you as you go through this difficult time. Love you Griff and Donna! Wish we could be there.
