Hi Leslie - we were so sorry to hear about Gus - it’s been so many years since we have seen or spoke to both of you but both Laura and I remember so fondly the many years of fun we all had together back in the 90’s. We moved to NY in 2003 and have been here ever since. We would love to reconnect with you and personally share memories. Our hearts go out to you and Aaron and all that lived Gus. The Beber’s

My deepest condolences to you all. I had the pleasure of getting to know Gus in 1988 during a Dale Carnegie program. He was a firecracker then and he was a pleasure to know.
I'm so sorry for your loss.

So very sorry to hear about Gus' passing. My sincere condolences to the Baril family. Working at Money Mart was my first career job out of school, and Gus was amazing to work for, and I am truly grateful for that time. He was the true definition of an entrepreneur, and he had a vision that helped everyone around him succeed. I had not seen Gus for a long time, but always think back on those years very fondly. May he rest in peace.

Two weeks have passed and I still have the "gut punch" I got when I heard from Leslie that Gussie was so so very ill.
We were life long friends growing up together in Edmonton. What a ride... I was with Gussie when he met Leslie at Boston's Bottom in Penticton and Gus was with me when I met my wife Cathy at a Memeo Beach Dance just South of Edmonton!
We had so much fun in every chapter of our 60 year friendship ( I knew him when he was an alter boy ) Yes Gus was an alter boy:)
We did many things with Paul and Billy, Gus was a great big brother, lots of laughs always.
We did not see much of each other when he moved East but did get together at their place in Toronto and in the Muskoka's and Florida. The four of us never skipped a beat when we got together, always fun, just like we carried on our friendship as though we had never been apart. I will and am missing him greatly, I just never imagined that my good buddy would get sick and die, I still don't believe it? Gus was truly larger than life!!
Our heartfelt condolences to his beautiful, warm hearted wife and best friend Leslie and son Aaron and bro's Paul and Billy.

I was very saddened to hear of Gus's passing and send my love and condolences to Leslie and Aaron. He was such a fascinating person and blessed with such a unique personality.
I met Gus in March 1988, became fast friends and had so many great times with Gus, Leslie and the many friends and family that were always around. He was 5 years older than me and I always looked up to him as a brother and he became a real inspiration for me. He was kind, unassuming, had a great sense of humor and would always be interested in other people - what they did, their life story and really who they were as a people. In those early days he would always talk about his time in Edmonton and was such a big fan of the Oilers seeing many of them including Gretzky, Messier, Coffey and others in the local bars! I recall watching the Jays win the world series - 94 I think - with Gus and Leslie at a bar in Oakville - such a great memory!
I'm sorry that he had to go through his battle with cancer - knowing Gus I'm sure he did not lose his love of life, family or friends, regardless of his own suffering. I will always remember our friendship fondly and be thankful for the great times we had. Rest in peace Gus and enjoy your ongoing pursuit to break 70. You will be missed.

I'm so sorry to hear that Gus has passed away. I haven't seen Gus in many years but thought of him often. Gus and I didn't always see eye to eye on how to build the Money Mart brand in Toronto but in hindsight he drove me to be a better business man and in many ways was a mentor to me. For that I'm eternally grateful and for our friendship over the many years. To Leslie, Aaron, Paul and Edie, my thoughts and prayers are with you and the rest of the family. May Gus RIP.

I’m so sorry to hear of Gus’s passing. Although I hadn’t seen Gus in some time, I thought of him often. We didn’t always see eye to eye on how to build the Money Mart brand in Toronto and surrounding area but in hindsight he drove me to be better and he was a mentor to me. He pushed me to grow as a business owner and for my business to grow alongside of his. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Leslie, Aaron, Paul and Edie. May he RIP.

Gus was what I call my hero. He was my brother-in-law who fought the biggest battle of his life, cancer, with true class and dignity. With all he was going through he always had a big smile and his unforgettable one liners would surely bring a smile to you. He was infectious with that. I will forever remember our heart to heart talks about cancer, as we both experienced it, his much worse than any battle of mine. He inspired me to get through anything. I strive to be like him and never complain. Just enjoy life no matter what card is dealt to you, and smile, smile, smile. Thank you so much Gus for the strength you have showed me I can have when needed. I will miss our talks, but I can still talk to you in my heart. Thanks for the memories. I will never forget you

I fondly remember that most of us could not get over the great karma that Gus had, especially his ability to find the impossibly great parking spot! In reflecting on Gus's life, it is very evident that good intent and good deeds contributed to good karma. I remember my original conversation with Gus when he was first diagnosed. On that day and for the rest of his life he remained positive that he would take on this challenge like he did every other challenge; with the intent to prevail. His matter of fact approach to dealing with life's obstacles was so positive and unwavering yet never did he seek attention or fanfare. Over the remaining years he quietly fought the battles yet lived life to the full. I think he did prevail and astonished us all.

Gus to me was more than a brother. We lost our Dad when I was in my early twenties and from that time Gus stepped up and assumed the roles of father, brother, mentor and friend. We had a working relationship of close to forty years which included the years I have spent in Australia building a business. During that time Gus always had my back which I attribute to our success. I have seen a lot of the world due to his generosity.
We were never an overly affectionate group of bothers and rarely would tell each other we loved each other. If I had another chance I would tell him and let him know he changed my life and my family for the better.
I will see you in the future big brother and look forward to our great conversations.

Gus was a great friend of ours. He was a very generous , thoughtful, knowledgeable and successful person. Gus fought his battle courageously and lived his life to the fullest never complaining.
We had so much fun together.
He loved boating in Muskoka and Naples. One fond memory, was a beautiful boat trip to the “Snook Inn” ( a fun dive and a few drinks )
Gus was at the peek of his game in golf and we are sure he was about to break 70.
And in the end, IT IS NOT THE YEARS IN YOUR LIFE THAT COUNTS, IT IS THE LIFE IN YOUR YEARS.
We will miss you dearly. Ted and Roeamond

My memory of Gus is that he was both personable and professional. He was creative and forward in seeing ways he could provide a service for those who needed it. I especially remember Gus and Leslie together as a "powerhouse couple" like Abraham and Sarah going to new territories to bring a blessing to those they encounter. Through their business, they created opportunity and friendship among employees and partners. I am so glad to have been part of the early years of their team. I remember precious times of sharing meals and stories. We laughed and cried together too. I am sure that many remember Gus with smiles by his insights and kindness. May we all have peace in memory of Gus' life. My heart and prayers to Leslie, Aaron, Paul, Edie and family. God bless you and give you peace.

Gus was a special person. You never left a conversation without gaining knowledge, insight and thoughtful perspective. We were all better people for knowing Gus.
Gus never let on, never complained as he would say “who does that” .
Gus was one of the most generous people I’ve met.
