Gwendolyn Simmons Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 12, 2024.
Gwendolyn Ann Simmons (nee Walford), 86, of Wallingford, Connecticut, passed away peacefully in her home on May 7, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on January 9, 1938, in New Haven, Connecticut.

Gwen was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her husband, Joseph William Simmons Sr., and her six children: Shawn W. Waldron (Ginger) of Groton; Deborah L. Coan of San Marcos, California; Laurie A. McNamara (Michael) of Wallingford; Daniel A. Coan (Jill) of Westbrook; Joseph W. Simmons Jr.(Cara) of Wallingford; and Michelle M. Meade (Michael) of Jefferson, Georgia. Her grandchildren: Kelsey Aldana, Maggie Kaschel, Andrew McNamara, Patrick McNamara, Nicole Stark, Brendan Coan, Joseph Simmons III, Caleb Simmons, Alaina Simmons, Susanna Simmons, Benjamin Simmons, Jacob Meade, and Ellie Meade. Gwen was also cherished by her eight great-grandchildren.

She was a 1956 graduate of Lyman Hall High School in Wallingford, Connecticut. During high school, she studied flute at Yale and was the second chair flutist in the local symphony orchestra for two years. She was also in the acclaimed all-state orchestra and traveled around the state performing. She loved music and would memorize all the pieces she played. She was encouraged by her music professors to attend The Juilliard School in New York City but ended up attending Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island to study fashion design.

Gwen was a woman of countless talents, some of them being art, music, fashion, crafts, and cooking. She became an excellent seamstress, and made clothes and gowns for herself and others. During high school, she worked at the YMCA, as well as the First National Bank to earn money to fuel her passion of sewing.

In addition to being a homemaker, she was a single mom and worked as a waitress at the Oakdale Tavern, for several years. There, she met her husband Joseph and was married for 54 years. Gwen was adored by all her children, and although she did not follow either of her dreams, she enjoyed sharing her love of cooking with family and her artistic talents with her grandchildren.

She found humor in daily life and was known to play a practical joke on occasion, always ready with a funny story up her sleeve. She was the type of person who never met a stranger and also loved hosting family gatherings.

She also adored her cats, was an avid bird watcher, and loved all sorts of animals, especially the cows that she helped care for at a neighbor's farm. As a veracious reader, she remembered everything she read and was a walking encyclopedia with all kinds of information. With her listening ear and wisdom, she was able to help guide and encourage many in her circles.

She was involved with the family business for many years and was the friendly voice for Family Pest Control. She was known by her friends and business associates for her warm and endearing personality.

Her motherhood joy was completely fulfilled when she was reunited with her firstborn son, Shawn, after nearly 60 years.

She was raised in the First Congregational Church of Wallingford and was also involved as an adult. Although her faith was a quiet one, she had a strong belief in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Saviour and was assured of her eternal destiny in heaven.

She is predeceased by her parents, Stephen McQuat Walford from Montreal, Canada, and Thelma Ethel Hamilton from Fowler, Indiana, as well as her sister, Beverly Sue Danielson from Durango, Colorado.

A celebration of Gwen's life will be held at Heritage Baptist Church, 161 South Whittlesey Avenue, Wallingford, Connecticut, on Saturday, May 18th, at 11:00 am. A private reception, for family only, will be held afterward.

Gwen was my mother-in-law by name, but she was a true mother to me through and through. I was with her during her last breath, as she opened her eyes in heaven. Oh, if only I could have seen what she was seeing right then! I'm sure my dad was right there as one of the greeters at the gate of heaven. She was an amazing woman: unselfish, full of wisdom, never complained, always looking for the good in all...I could go on, but I want to share the poem I wrote for her that I hope captures the essence of who she was:

A Mom's Heart (by Cara Simmons)

You never can imagine,
When you will be apart.
And emptiness that is a void,
A hole inside your heart.

Though her life was full of pain,
She focused on the good.
Always there to lend an ear,
To do whate'er she could.

She was a gracious hostess,
A mother, wife, and friend.
She loved her birds and kitties, too,
Right up to the end.

I know she's up in heaven,
Where forever she'll abide.
But for now, I'll see her smile,
As I watch the ocean tides.

Her voice will be the sound of bells,
And in the birds that sing.
Her eyes will twinkle from above,
Like the stars of early spring.

Me and my brother Andrew have many beautiful memories with our grandma. She taught us so many things about art, kindness, and so much more. We spent countless weekends over at her house watching movies, eating fantastic home-cooked meals, and laughing together. These memories are talked about often with myself and my brother.

She always had an interesting fact about something, she was so knowledgeable in many different topics. We loved to ingest the knowledge she had to offer. She also had many cats! At one point she had around 9 cats all with different personalities, they were much fun and were a big part of our visits with her.

Grammy loved me and my brother and we will always hold her memories in our hearts and never forget the love she gave us.

Missing you grammy, and I hope me and Andrew made you proud, we love you so much and wish we could say this to you one more time <3

Gwen and I played flute together in grade school and high school with Dr. Otto and Miss Hart. She was my neighbor on Mansion Road, Wallingford in her first marriage and her girls and my daughter Cindy were friends for a long time. I know that she was sick for a while and is now at peace with her son Shawn. My heart go out to her family will be missed and God Bless the family.

My fondest memories of Gwen were the many conversations I´ve enjoyed with her as a teen at her home on Ward Street, when I was waiting on Laurie or Deb, yep going way back. She always made me feel loved and welcomed and she had such a contagiously cheerful disposition and a calming way about her. Then as time went on there were the many important family events (weddings, birthdays) where we could catch up. I´d always gravitated to Gwen at those occasions. Also the countless times through the years that I´d call her panicked with a pest problem and every time, she´d very assuredly walked me through the easy solution. It´s been a privilege and a blessing to have been loved and accepted into this beautiful big family for 48 years! I´ll miss your mom.
My love to you all, Allie
