Professor Gwendolyn Caldwell Stanford, age 84, of Hampton, Georgia passed away June 4, 2010. Mrs. Stanford was born in Rock Hill, SC on November 20, 1925 and was the daughter of the late Sara Lou Ella Foster and Samuel Moffatt Caldwell. Professor Stanford had a 44 year teaching career. She was an associate professor of English and Literature at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, Georgia for 34 years. Professor Stanford did her undergraduate study in modern languages and English at Winthrop College, in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and her graduate study in French and comparative literature at the University of North Carolina, in Chapel Hill. By the age of twenty-two, she was a college professor. She has taught French, Spanish, and English at Winthrop College; Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee; and West Georgia College in Carrollton, Georgia. She taught English and Literature at Georgia College and State University. Mrs. Stanford taught in Tennessee until she and her late husband, William Henry Stanford, Jr., moved to Carrollton, Georgia. After her husband’s death, she joined the faculty of Georgia College and State University in 1969, and in addition to teaching, has served as coordinator of freshman English. Professor Stanford wrote poetry in both English and French; several of her poems have appeared in the Georgia College and State University magazine, The Peacock’s Feet. One of her proudest accomplishments was authoring the book, Legende Doree ou Legenda Aurea which was published in 1986. She is a member of Morrow Presbyterian Church, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Daughters of the American Revolution, American Association of University Women, and American Association of Retired Professors. She was preceded in death by her husband, Attorney William Henry Stanford, Jr. She was the loving mother and grandmother to her daughter and son-in-law, Marla and Ronald Reese of Locust Grove and daughter, Tina Gwen Stanford of Hampton; grandchildren, William Reese and Kathleen Reese of Locust Grove and Joseph Stanford and William Stanford of Hampton. Funeral services for Professor Stanford will be Monday, June 7, 2010 – 2:00 PM at Morrow Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. John Callahan officiating. Interment will be at Carroll Memory Gardens in Carrollton, Georgia at 4:00 PM. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 4:00 – 6:00 PM.
