GREENSBORO — Dr. H.D. Flowers, II died July 3, 2010.
He was born in Pompano Beach, Florida on June 8, 1940, to the late Lafayette Jim Flowers and Nancy Nellie Mae Smith. Dr. Flowers received his undergraduate degree from Grambling State University, a Masters Degree in Arts Administration from Florida Atlantic University, a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Acting/Directing from Yale University and a Ph.D. Degree in Theatre from Southern Illinois University.
Dr. Flowers was a true giant in educational theatre, with a teaching career that dates back to the mid 60's. Among the many schools in which he built solid theatre programs are South Carolina State, University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Bowie State, North Carolina A&T, Livingstone College, and Bennett College. To his credit, Dr. Flowers was a brilliant director who won many, many awards and honors--so many, in fact, that some argue that no single educator/director won more awards during his lifetime.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister: Willie James Clark, Frank Truman Mills and Emma Jean Mills, respectively.
He leaves to cherish his memory two brothers: John A. Mills, Jr. of Pompano Beach, Florida and Michael Mills of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; one sister: Leona Mercedia Mills of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; two sons: Lamar Mills of Trenton, New Jersey and Dedrick Mills-Flowers (Gwen) of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; one goddaughter: Mary G. Holloway of Greensboro; one godson: Repreacth Kidd of Dallas, Texas; one grandson: Mickal Wilson; one granddaughter: Micah B. Adams; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and numerous former students around the country working successfully in all aspects of the Arts and Entertainment Industry who fondly referred to him as "PaPa" or "Doc".
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. July 8, 2010 at NC A&T Alumni Foundation Events Center. The viewing will be from 10:30 until 11 a.m. Flowers and condolences can be sent to Hargett Funeral Service, Inc.

He is the human being responsible for my love and understanding for Theatre. He instilled that love in me within the space of one year. He’s the most inspiring teacher that I have ever had. I have thought of him so many times over the years. I am so grateful to have sat under his artistic direction.

Dr. Flowers was a dear friend and colleague, truly an inspiration. I met him when he taught and directed at ULL in Lafayette, LA. Always kind and generous, he welcomed me to his rehearsals and performances. It was a joy to watch him at work with his students. May his family find peace in this hour of their bereavement.

My thoughts and prayers are sent to you in this hour of your grief. Although I did not know Dr. Flowers, I am grateful that he had the vision to start the theatre program at Livingstone College. May God continue to bless all that he did while he was here. I trust that his spirit will live on in your memories.

I am truly in shock right now. Dr. Flowers was such a wonderful man. He always had a smile on his face when I walked into his office. He lived and breathed theatre. I wish his family my sincere condolences.

Hey POPS!
Today is a tough one for me. I miss you! You entered my life when I was an 18 year old woman/child fresh out of Clinton, SC and instilled in me gifts and skills that have lasted throughout my life! I am thankful that we stayed in touch! I fondly recall the weekend calls from you. You would always say "Hey Lady, how are you?" And one day a couple of years ago those calls stopped. But right now it's too painful for me to turn back the hands of time so I will muster all of my strength to move foward in your memory. I know it's what you would want me to do!
I am including a text message that I received from my daughter when I told her that you had made your transition. It sums up what you mean to us both:
"OMG I totally forgot about that. I was so sad to hear the news. I cried
a little after you told me cause I remembered how dear of a friend he has always been to you and how he helped me to get into Livingstone when I had absolutely no sense of direction."
Thank you Papa for being one of my most brilliant educators and for being one of my life long mentors. Thank you for throwing my daughter a life-line when she needed it most. You would be very proud of her!
Rest in peace! I will look for you on the other side!
With Love,
Roelanzye (Roe) Wilson

When I met Doc I was a knucklehead teenager who hung out with his sons in the neighborhood in Laurel, MD when he taught at Bowie State University. He heard me crack jokes and knew I had an interest in acting, so he offered me an opportunity to pursue that by attending university at NCA&T. Doc was an amazing director and educator, who squeezed every bit of talent out of us. He accepted nothing but our best on a daily basis. The proof is in the many honors he and his players received throughout the years. The critique sessions at the end of rehearsals were always spot on and constructive, although I always felt skewered when I got them. I was proud to be part of such a talented group and hold those memories very dearly. Although, I didn't continue to pursue an acting career after leaving A&T, he instilled a work ethic in me that I carry to this day. I wish I had taken the opportunity to tell him these things in life.
Thank You Doc,
Rico

I remember Dr. Flowers from South Carolina State College at that time. I watched the Henderson Davis Players preform some of the best plays of my very young college life in 1968 under his leadership. Dr Flowers was also my instructor. A good person.

And if I go,while you are still here....... Know that I live on,
Vibrating to a different music behind a thin vail you can not see through.
You will not see me, so you must have faith.I'll wait for the times when we can soar together again. Each aware of the other.
Until then , do your best to please GOD, as you live your lives to the fullest. And when you need me, just wisper my name in your heart,....I will be there.
Love,
