H. Dyett Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 4, 2018.
Tommy died peacefully at Our House Too in Rutland City, Vermont, on Aug. 29, 2018.
He is survived by his loving wife, Eleanor G. Dyett; and his three loving daughters Julia, Charlotte and Christine. He is also survived by his devoted sister, Kirk Dyett Huffard; his five grandchildren Thomas Rice Lawton, Frances Bennett Lawton, of Trumble, Connecticut, Malik Samson, Jemma Nariman and Leo Rayan Elkhatib, of Scarborough, Maine; and many nieces and nephews, including his late brother Johnny's two boys John and Jason Dyett.
Tommy grew up in Rome, New York. He attended Hotchkiss School and received a BA in History in 1965 from Hobart College in Geneva, New York.
He spent a year in Vietnam with the Army: nine months in combat and the last three months in Saigon, working for Gen. Joseph A. McChristian, who was the chief of intelligence in Vietnam under Gen. William Westmoreland from July 1965 to July 1967.
After the war, Tommy worked for Citibank as a private banker and spent most of his career at Morgan Guaranty Trust Co. in New York City. He and Ellie raised their family in New York City and Rye, New York, before retiring to Manchester Village, Vermont, in 1999.
Tommy served on the board of The Amsterdam Nursing Home near Columbia University from 1973 to 2000, where, during his tenure, he served as treasurer and president of the Home.
In retirement, Tommy, along with Ellie, housed international students for Burr and Burton Academy for five years. In addition to this, he spent six years doing service work with Ellie in Guatemala, followed by six more years in an orphanage in Nicaragua called Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos which housed infants and children under the age of seven. Among many of the services Tommy performed, he made and repaired furniture at the orphanage for the nuns, and he especially enjoyed playing baseball with the children and swimming in Lake Nicaragua with the children and the pigs!
Tommy served on the Manchester Village Board of Trustees for several years and was president of the Ekwanok Country Club from 2007 to 2010.
He and Ellie were keen advocates and supporters of the Manchester Community Library.
Tommy was an avid golfer, enjoyed woodworking and walking with his beloved dogs Jazz and Diva, on the golf course in the winter and the Equinox trails in the summer.
A service in Tommy's memory will be held at the Christ Our Savior Roman Catholic Parish, 398 Bonnet Street, Manchester, Vermont, on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 10 a.m., followed immediately by a reception at the Ekwanok Country Club.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: The Ekwanok Scholarship Trust, Ekwanok Country Club, 3262 Main St., P.O. Box 467, Manchester, VT 05254; Zion Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 717, Manchester Center, VT 05255.

Your banking, playing golf & marrying Ellie,& all your charity work was such a major feat. But....Wisking eggs in a tall glass for scrambled eggs, and making that incredible tiger's eye maple table, really showed your unbelievable talent. What a guy. Much love to all of you, Betsy

My sincere condolences to Tom's family. My mom, Vida, resides at Our House Too so that is where I first met Tom. Although I didn't know him well, the first thing I noticed when he arrived there was his kind eyes. He would always give me a beautiful smile when I spoke to him. After reading his obituary, I can see that his kind eyes and the softness in his smile came from the depth of his heart and soul. What a wonderful life of giving he lived. My heart goes out to all of you.
