Celebration of Life: 10 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Waxahachie, with Dr. Richard Reed and Dr. Joe Larson officiating. Burial: Hillcrest Memorial Park. Visitation: The family will receive friends and family 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Wayne Boze Funeral Home.
Pallbearers: Nick Shaw, Dick Voss, Jimmy Mitchell, David Hitt, John Boyd, Lonnie Cockerham and Larry Wilson. Honorary pallbearers: former district superintendents.
Memorials: May be made to First United Methodist Church, 505 W. Marvin Ave., Waxahachie, Texas 75165; or Methodist Children's Home in Waco.
The Rev. Hitt was born in Waxahachie to James Cleveland and Emily Louisa Alday Hitt. He graduated from Forreston High School and received degrees from Baylor University, TCU and SMU. Dan started his ministry at the age of 15 at Oak Branch Methodist Church. He served as a Methodist minister for 48 years, serving in Bardwell District Ellis County, Hill County, McLennan County, Falls County, Young County, Tarrant County, Johnson County, Erath County, Bosque County and Brown County. To his record, the Rev. Hitt built two churches, remodeled one, was listed in Who's Who in the United Methodist Church, Outstanding Young Men of America and Personalities of the South, and was a member of the Lions Club since 1961. He served on the board of Texas Alcohol, Narcotics and Education, Texas state board of American Cancer Society, internship, and the chaplain department of Harris Methodist Fort Worth and Dublin. He also served on the boards of Social Christian Concerns, Religion and Race, and Equitable Compensation, all with the United Methodist Central Texas Conference. He retired Jan. 2, 1998.
He married Eleanor Frances Allen on June 8, 1998, in Waxahachie.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Carrie.
Survivors: His wife, Eleanor "Ellie" of Waxahachie; children, the Rev. Ann Hitt of Stephenville, Michael Hitt and his wife, Candy, of Fort Worth and Jan Henderson and her husband, Tony, of Irving; stepchildren, Diane Walker and her husband, Mickey, and Mitch Wadsworth, all of Joshua, Kim Pearson and her husband, Bobby, of Cleburne, Holley Harris and husband, Randy, of Joshua and Paula Cribbs and her husband, Don, of Uganda, east Africa; grandchildren, Katie Downs and Sarah Bishop; 11 stepgrandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; brothers and their wives, Harry and Fanny Hitt of Waxahachie, Rex and Barbara Hitt of Ovilla; and sisters, Elva York of Waxahachie, Hazel Cockerham of Red Oak and Margaerite Wilson of Waxahachie.
