My condolences to Roger's family and friends. I hadn't known him long, only during a shared course at Ft. Rucker last Spring, but I will always remember him for his humor he injected into the dry world of military professional development. He will be missed.

I remember well the first day I met Roger. He was the "commander apparant" for B Co, 2/11 SF in Youngstown. But he had some ramping up time to do down at Bn Hqtrs on Americana Pkwy in Columbus. We became good friends and developed a tight relationship, so as things will go in Group, when he finally left for his new command, he dragged this old warrant officer with him. Over the next 15 odd years, Roger and I closed down one group and started a new company in the 2/19 SF. No matter how things developed, we seemed to always meet and swap intel and were eventually both CW3's together. I will miss my old friend and comrade. The SF community will not be the same without him. My deepest sorrow goes out the Roger's family. Please find comfort in knowing that MAJ H.R. Roger Mills was one of the finest SF soldiers I have known and my true friend and comrade in arms.
My deepest regards,
Jonathan E. Chorpenning

Roger was a gentleman and a very sharp officer. He served well and died like the soldier he was.

My deepest sympathy goes out to Roger's family. I remember Roger well from our time together at B/2/11 and beyond. He was a brother in arms of the highest calibre and standards. The training he received at West Point and in Special Forces served him well over his long and fruitful career as an Officer in the US Army, Army Reserves and National Guard. He will be remembered by all of us in SF and all who knew and loved him. In his memory I am posting a poem I penned a few months ago to honor my fallen brothers, those who understand the sacrifices soldiers make and the brotherhood that is formed by those sacrifices. I hope that it offers your family some comfort.
The Gathering Place
Our lives portend a journey
From our birth unto our death
A tangled web of experiences
Creating the map of our bequeath.
The roads we travel are many
Some short and others long,
Twisted and broken, straight and narrow
Some recorded in verse or song.
The tales we weave are epic
When shared within our fold
The deeds achieved… historic
And the memories never grow old.
The Elysian fields are found by some
Valhalla’s halls others may share
And Haydes gates from the river Styx
As the boatman takes his fare.
No matter what we call it,
Our mythos is our goal
It’s the hall of deeds and legends…
A place where we all go.
Our brothers go before us…
To that place from history past
A place known only to warriors,
A place to rest at last.
The songs become the legends
For our brotherhood to embrace
And when the reaper comes a calling
We meet at the gathering place.

I wish for his family to know that Chief Mills was a friend and mentor to every soldier he met and cared for everyone of them as if they were his own. He was one of a kind, and my heart aches to know I will never see his warm smile or feel his firm handshake again. I will miss him terribly, but will never forget the lessons in leadership and the sincere humanity he demonstrated every day of his life. I am blessed to have known him.
Respectfully

My deepest sympathy goes out to Roger's family, fellow soldiers, loved ones, and friends. There is a big empty place in the world left by his passing. I will always remember his laugh, his warm enthusiasm, and his seasoned perspective. He was a great man who is greatly missed. With love and respect.
