Hal Anawalt Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 13 to Mar. 15, 2015.
August 18, 1924 - March 6, 2015 Hal Anawalt passed away peacefully the morning of March 6, 2015 in Santa Barbara, CA. He was 90 years old. Hal was born In Glendale California on August 18, 1924 to Bernard and Marguerite Anawalt.. He attended the local schools and spent time at Balboa Island in the summers where he became an accomplished small boat sailor. Hal attended Glendale High School and Oregon State University before enlisting in the US Army where he served in active duty in the European Theatre. Hal was wounded twice and was interned in a German POW camp until his release near the end of the war. He was the recipient of a Purple Heart. Following the war, Hal attended UCLA and then joined his grandfather and father at the Anawalt Lumber Company which eventually had locations in Montrose, Tujunga, Pacoima, and Newhall. Hal married Frances Alex on September 19, 1947. They set up house in Sunland, and then moved to La Canada in 1963 with their four children. Hal shared his enthusiasm for the outdoors through family camping, backpacking and skiing trips as well as yearly vacations to Balboa Island. When Fran passed away in 1991, Hal found himself spending most of his time at their vacation home in Hailey, Idaho which is close to the Sun Valley resort. He skied in the winter and golfed in the summer and it was here where he met Joan Price Stewart. They married on May 23, 1992. Hal and Joan divided their time between Sun Valley and Indian Wells, enjoying both of their extended families who lived in California and Idaho. As always, the outdoors was the focus of Hal's activities. His family joined him on the slopes, on the golf course, on the many hiking trails in Idaho, with a river trip or two thrown in for good measure. Hal spent his final years in Santa Barbara with Joan who passed away in 2014. To all whom knew him, Hal was known as a gentleman and a man who always seemed to have a twinkle in his eye. Hal is survived by his daughter Christie and husband Ed Moore of Santa Barbara; son Tom and wife Helen of Mill Valley, CA; son Jim and wife Carroll of Pasadena; and son Gary and wife Patty of Nevada City, CA. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren as well as Joan's four daughters and seven grandchildren. Per Hal's request, there will be no formal services. Memorial donations may be made to Visiting Nurse Hospice Care of Santa Barbara (vnhcsb.org) or Wood River Land Trust (Woodriverlandtrust.org)

This gentleman was my great uncle. I didn't get to know him very well, though stories from family members for the most part. He hosted an Easter Egg hunt in his beautiful garden when I was a little girl and I remember him having a lot of fun with that. I had fun too :-) It is a nice memory for me. I wish I would have had the chance to know him better....but my Auntie Coco told me he was a WWII service man and a brave patriot.
