Harlan Schley Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 31, 2014.
Schley, Harlan R.

Harlan R. Schley, age 89 of Clintonville, formerly of Land O' Lakes, passed away Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at Pine Manor Health Care Center, Embarrass.

Harlan was born October 22, 1924, in the Township of Larrabee, Waupaca County, son of the late William and Emma (Hoffman) Schley. He was baptized on November 23, 1924 and later confirmed on April 10, 1938 at Christus Lutheran Church, Clintonville. He grew up on the family farm helping with daily chores, where he learned good work ethics and took pride in every task performed. As a young man Harlan enjoyed roller skating, learning to play the accordion, and help his family at the Broadview Ballroom. Harlan attended Pleasant Hill School and later Clintonville High School. He was united in marriage to Marian Roland on November 10, 1945 and together they farmed and raised thirteen children on the family farm in the Township of Larrabee. Harlan's interest in modern farm technology brought him to own and operate a barn equipment company while overseeing the daily operations of the farm. They left the daily farm operation in 1974 and continued to sell and install barn equipment until his retirement in 1976. Harlan and Marian lived "the good life" in the north woods on Little Birch Lake, Land O' Lakes, where they enjoyed fishing, playing many a game of sheephead, entertaining family, friends, and relatives, whether it be for a day, or overnight visits. He had a special interest in geology, enjoyed reading, dancing, watching sports events on television, and was always focused on the weather and how it affected farm crops, but his greatest enjoyment in life was to spend time with his family and friends. Marian preceded Harlan in death on November 2, 1991. He continued to serve many friends and neighbors - both year round and summer residents of the Land O' Lakes area, looking after and caring for their homes and properties. There was never a job too big, nor too far for him to lend a helping hand. He was a past member of the Clintonville Lions Club, lifetime member of Christus Lutheran Church and was also a member of the Hope Lutheran Church, Land O' Lakes. In November 2012, Harlan moved back to the Clintonville area.

I met Harlan in 1992 through my good friend Toni Cross who also has passed away, He told us such interesting stories and was one of the nicest people I have ever met. He did a bit of care taking for us in Land O'Lakes. The world has lost some of it's shine now that Harlan is gone. My husband Dewey, daughter Destry and I give our sympathy and thoughts to Harlan's family at this time.

To the family of Harlan, please accept my heartfelt condolences on the passing of
Harlan. Harlan was a great help to my late husband and myself for many years when we lived in Land O Lakes at our summer home. He was a wonderful, soft spoken man who was always willing to help us with any project, big or small. He was always fun to talk to, no matter what the subject was. He was always a very caring and decent man and we were proud to call him our friend. Again, my sympathies to the family.
