HAROLD BARKER Obituary

BARKER--Dr. Harold Grant, died in his home in Rye, NY on March 9, 2011. Since 1953 Dr. Barker had been a faculty member at Columbia and Attending Surgeon at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. He was also Medical Director of Presbyterian Hospital from 1974 to 1982. Dr. Barker was born June 10, 1917 in Salt Lake City. He obtained his M.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1943. He served with the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1944-46 being discharged as Captain. From 1947-53 he was a Surgical Resident at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. The remainder of his career was at Columbia where he advanced to full professorship in 1968. His research was supported by grants from the NIH for 22 consecutive years. Dr. Barker was a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and a member of the Society of University Surgeons, The American Surgical Association and the Halsted Society. He was a member of the Century Association, the Charaka Club, the Manursing Island Club and the American Yacht Club. Dr. Barker's wife the former Kathleen Butler had been vice president of the Garden Club of America and President of the Rye Garden Club. She died on December 2, 2010. Dr. Barker is survived by his daughter, Janet Barker Pinckney, his son Douglas Barker, his grandchildren Meredith Pinckney Kent, Carolyn Pinckney Fox, Thomas Pinckney and by his brother, Clyde Barker.
