Harold Behar Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 26 to Jan. 29, 2023.
Harold John Behar passed away peacefully on January 15, 2023 in Lutz, Florida two days after his 84th birthday. He was born on January 13, 1939 in Montclair, New Jersey and grew up in his hometown, West Orange, New Jersey. Harold is survived and missed by his loving wife Patricia (nee Conklin) of 38 years, and his children, Harold, David, and Christopher. Forever cherished and remembered by his five grandchildren, Logan, Katelyn, Connor, Lindsay, and Alix. He is survived by his brother Joseph, his sisters Ann Sigler and Elaine Halfpenny (Husband Gerald), and in-laws Nancy Galbraith (Husband Michael), and his many loving nieces and nephews. Harold was predeceased by his father Joseph, his mother Rose, his brother Raymond, and in-laws Marie Behar and George Sigler. Harold attended West Orange High School where he lettered in baseball (catcher), basketball (guard) and football (quarterback). Harold proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1959 - 1961 in Aschaffenburg, Germany. He played baseball for the Army throughout Europe in his years with the service. He joined the West Orange Fire Department in 1962 and rose to the rank of Fire Inspector. Raising his three sons, he was actively involved in their school and athletic pursuits as a teacher, coach and mentor. Later, he supported their career aspirations - always offering sage advice along the way. He loved spending time in his "Happy Place" down the shore in Seaside Park. He started each day reading the newspaper from front to back with his breakfast. It kept him sharp and up to date on the world around him. By far, his favorite activity was hosting front porch gatherings with his friends and family. In small groups and large. The conversations were always lively and ranged from politics, family stories, and discussions of the latest book he read. He read a lot of books! Mostly biographies of his favorite sports heroes (Ted Williams was his No.1), giants of industry, politicians, and lots of history books. He loved taking his grandchildren seining, fishing and crabbing on the 5th ave pier. He'd invite them to watch, learn and help with his home projects. He loved exploring the boardwalk and shorelines with his Florida family-especially nieces Katie and Kelly. He also enjoyed traveling with his loving wife and wonderful partner Patty. Together they explored Europe, the U.S., and beyond. He loved seeing new places, learning historical facts, and seeing how different cultures lived. He had close lifelong friendships with Walter, Ralph, and Charlie (they know who they are). He loved watching just about any sport on television and he always looked forward to Sunday. Sundays were for spaghetti and meatballs - his niece Marianne's meatballs were his favorites. Harold had very strong values and principles. Kindness was his unspoken rule. He was always ready to help a friend or stranger in need. To borrow a bike, help fix some porch furniture, carry something heavy - he was there. His legacy will carry on forever, reminding us that we control our outlook and attitudes. We choose to live a life of meaningful acts of love and kindness to all. A Celebration of Life gathering will be held at the Hanover Manor, East Hanover, N.J. on Saturday February 4th from 10 am - 12 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Lefty Boland Charity Golf Tournament which funds sports programs in West Orange for PAL and special needs initiatives. Donations can be made Lefty Boland Golf, c/o West Orange Recreation Dept., 66 Main Street, West Orange, NJ 07052. Checks payable to Lefty Boland Golf. Tax Deductible ID# 22-2159225

I knew Harold as a close friend of my brother Pete Smith. Pete passed away last month, so the gang is dwindling.

We are saddened by Harold's passing. I was with him on various sports teams from Washington grammar school, little league baseball, Edison Jr high and WO high school. He was always a leader as well as a mentor for those he played with. Growing up near each other, we were good pals outside the sports arena as well. While we went our separate ways after high school, he will always be remembered as a good and loyal friend.

I'm sorry I didn't know Harold. I would have been about 13 years behind him at West Orange H.S. but reading the testimonials before me brought tears to my eyes. Congratulations, Harold, on a life well lived.

A man of few when he was coaching the Rebels but when he talked you listened. There's nothing you can't do if you put your mind to it he would tell me. RIP HAROLD

Harold was a man of few words.. A simple guy yet his presence always lit up the room. I never saw him angry! My only wish would be to hear more sports stories. He was quite the athlete. I would like to assume that he had a life well-lived. Patti is an angel. She didn´t miss a beat and he loved her very much. My condolences go out to his sons and all of his family! He will be missed

One of the greatest athletes to come out of West Orange High School. Enrolled into the West Orange Hall of Fame. A great honor bestowed on him and well deserved.
Harold was a great friend, great father and loving husband. He will be missed but not forgotten. May he rest in peace.

Harold was a coach for the Rebels football team in the 60´s. When he threw you the football you felt the sting. He was a a great friend and influence to many that hung at the store and Harry´s. He will surely be missed. RIP Harold.

Good to have an older guy like Harold available around the playground to help you with sports. I wish I could have been around for some of his front porch discussions.

Harold was truly an icon around WOHS and Colgate Field in the 50's. Myself and so many other kids looked up to him. Never an unkind word. Just encouragement. He will be missed.

Growing up in The Valley and living across the street from Jenkins Playground in the 50's, it was impossible not to have known and admired Mr. Behar. Recall sneaking into the WOHS football games to see him play. Also, in football games we made up in Jenkins, it was an honor to be Harold Behar. Summer nights, shagging flies and being selected as a batboy for the town softball league are fond memories. He was a srar in that league. I also remember Mr. Behar playing horseshoes and keeping a watchful eye on us younger kids in the playground from the firehouse. He made us safe without us knowing it. Don't know if he realized the influence he had on us. It was special to me then and even more special in knowing of his passing. Rest in Peace Mr. Behar.

My acquaintance with Harold began our Soph year @ WOHS as a result of alphabetical seating in Homeroom. He was already an accomplished athlete, becoming the starting QB in his 1st year of varsity Football; and I was to become the writer of numerous articles in the WO Chronicle & its affiliate newspapers detailing his feats on the gridiron, court and field, all of which he mentioned having saved in his personal scrapbook. No athlete in my recollection accomplished more with his
given skills than Harold did. He was also the most ambidextrous person I've ever encountered, writing with his left hand and dribbling and shooting a basketball left-handed, while throwing a football and
baseball & batting right-handed. Despite not being a student in the classic sense, he was nevertheless a dedicated learner in all his pursuits. During our lengthy acquaintance, he never displayed anger toward anyone. Thank you for the memories! Ever your friend.
