Harold Burr Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 13, 2006.
Harold E. Burr, 77, retired chief of police for Ormond Beach, passed away May 11, 2006. Born March 29, 1929, in Rockford, Ill., he was the son of the late Harold L. and Harriet Daggett Burr, and a 1946 graduate of East High School. In 1951, he enlisted in the Army, serving until 1953. While stationed at Fort McClellan, Ala., he met his devoted wife, the late Betty Jean Burr. He moved to Ormond Beach in 1953, and began working for the city as a lifeguard. His enjoyment for cooking brought him to the Ormond Hotel, where he worked as a cook for several years. Mr. Burr later transferred to the police department, where he retired as police chief in 1987 after 34 years. Because of his love of teaching children, he volunteered for the Ormond Beach Recreation Department for 30 years, where he had the opportunity to coach all teams in all sports. For this dedication, he was honored as Mr. Recreation in 1987. He was a member of the Florida Peace Officers Association from 1959-1976, and the Ormond Beach Elks, where he was named Elk of the Year 1994-1995. He is survived by his son, Robin Burr, daughter-in-law, Debbie Burr, granddaughter, Linsey Burr, and longtime companion, "Honeybear," all of Ormond Beach; and daughter, Faith Schwalback, and son-in-law, Scott Schwalback, Naples. Friends may call Sunday, May 14, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Volusia Memorial Funeral Home, 548 N. Nova Rd., Ormond Beach. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, May 15, at the River Bend Community Church, 2080 W. Granada Blvd., Ormond Beach. Donations may be made in his memory to the Halifax Humane Society, 2364 LPGA Blvd., Daytona Beach, FL 32124. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Volusia Memorial Funeral Home, 548 N. Nova Rd., Ormond Beach.

Mr. Burr gave me the blueprint for coaching and teaching in my community recreation programs. He has always been a influence and an example of how we give to one another.

I personally have a lot of fond memories of "COACH" Burr, most from the Elks lodge where we hung out and laughed, and watched the Gator football games on Saturdays. I loved attending the "Cubbies games at City Island park with him too, he was such and avid fan! I was also priveledged to have been coached by him in my adult years as a member of the Elks softball team. We were in the original Elks softball tournament that led to the state tourneys they play today. He was a good friend, and I will truly miss having him around. I have so many great memories that we shared and he was always kept me laughing. I am deeply saddened by his loss, and my prayers go out to all of the family. We will all miss you "COACH".
