Harold “Mark” Cox, 89, former long-time teacher at North Lamar ISD, died Wednesday, July 9, 2014, in Bonham.
Bright-Holland Funeral Home has scheduled memorial services for 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 15th at First Christian Church with Rev. Lory Hunt officiating and military rites rendered by the U.S. Air Force. The family will receive friends following the service in White Fellowship Hall.
Mark was born May 24, 1925, in Amarillo, and graduated from Tulia High School in 1943. He joined the U. S. Army Air Corps in 1943, where he became a B-17 copilot serving stateside in World War II and then overseas in the Korean War. He graduated from West Texas State University in 1949 with a B.S. Degree and began his long Texas teaching career in Kress. It was at this time he went overseas during the Korean War. Upon returning as an Air Force Captain, he continued his teaching career, primarily as a math, science, and history teacher in both primary and secondary grade levels. Mark also taught in Roosevelt, Perryton, Plano and Sanger school districts and retired after teaching in North Lamar ISD from 1973 to 1993. Many of his former students (including his daughters) remember that the way to get “Mr. Cox” off subject in class was to ask him a question about airplanes, spaceflight, astronomy, or World War II – because he truly had a wealth of information he could tell them.
Mark is survived by his wife of 55 years, Gloria Harmer Cox of Paris; daughters, Lauri McIntosh & husband Todd of Allen and Julie Galiga and husband Todd of Pflugerville; grandchildren, Brian and Daniel McIntosh & Grace and Bonnie Galiga; sisters, Betty Brown of Burkburnett, Nina Englishbee of Fritch and Kathleen Vaughan of Garland; and 19 nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Mabel Cox of Tulia, two brothers, Earl Ray Cox and Ralph Cox and two sisters, Romaine Flanagin and Marvelle Neuman.

Dear Mrs. Cox, I only heard of your loss in the passing of Mr. Cox. You won't remember me however, I know you remember the young man that Mr. Cox represented in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, Sam Taylor. Sam is my son and I can't begin to tell you what a blessing Mr. Cox was in his life. Thank you, for the giving of your time when my son needed a male figure in his life. Mr. Cox was loved by this family and we are so hurt at your loss. Love, Yvonne Christain and Sam Taylor

Dear Gloria,
I was sharing with our son, D.J. about Mr. Cox's passing recently and the story he shared with me spoke of the impact this 'gentle giant' had on student's lives both in and out of the classroom. D.J. said he recalled Mr. Cox retired just before he was to enter the 5th grade and he had so hoped to have him as a teacher. Why, because of the kindness and friendly way he made students feel. As the son of a teacher, D.J. and his friends, Tom and James McVay, were daily riders on Mr. Cox's bus from their campus to the campus where their mother's both worked. It was the way he made D.J. feel so special to be the 'first off' of the bus. For many years, every time D.J. would see Mr. Cox around town, he always called him by name and exchanged pleasantries.
Know his influence has touched another educator, D.J. Now he is a director of choral activities in a private school but the demeanor in which he was introduced to by Mr. Cox goes with him to class every day.
Prayers for you and your family in the days ahead.

Mr. Cox touched the lives of many, and I too have many memories from the sixth grade classroom at Central Elementary. In addition, I have great memories with the entire Cox family.

Gloria,
I was saddened when I read about Mark's transition. But, on the other hand, my heart was lightened when I remembered the warmth of your smile whenever you mentioned Mark and the children. There is no better tribute than a life well-lived. I still remember the quote you often kept on your board, "If it is to be, it's up to me!"

You and your family are in my prayers. I was in Mr. Cox's history class the day President Kennedy was shot. As we heard the news, he put his head down and cried. No words needed. What a neat man. God bless you and your family.

In 1974 Mr Cox was my sixth grade teacher at Central Elementary in Sumner Tx. The memories of his class and his stories are some of best times of my life. To this day I share stories and memories of things he taught me with my children. Most recently I told them how he told us that when we were grown the world would be ran by computers and we would all have a hand held PC that we would carry everywhere. We thought this was a little unbelievable but here I am computer in hand writing this. Mr Cox also spoke often of the love he had for his wife and daughters. God Bless You All

Gloria,
You and your family are in our prayers!! I was privileged to have both of you as teachers!! When I read the comment by your daughter about getting teachers off subject, I had to smile because I can remember that happening in our history class and in Mr. Rogers algebra class! Those were wonderful days that molded our lives!! May God bless each of you!!

My name is Jonathan Fitzgerald and I am a former student of Mr Cox's Everett History class. While some kids would have said that he was too "by the book", I found his class rather enjoyable. Mr. Cox's stern exterior was easily broken when kids respected him and wanted to learn about our countries history. Teachers today could have learned a lot from him. Mr. Cox truly did love his country, and the military. His stories were fascinating especially to kids at the age we were. I am very sorry for your family's loss.Mr. Cox was a great, one of a kind man and will be missed by many.
With our deepest sympathies,
The Jonathan Fitzgerald Family
