Harold Gordon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 13, 2016.
Harold David Gordon

Age: 88 Matawan, NJ / New Bern, NC

Died unexpectedly Nov. 12, 2016 at home in New Bern, NC. He was born Feb. 10, 1928 in Bronx NY, and was preceded in death
by his father Harry when only 11, his sister Louise a year later, followed by his mother Winnie later in life and his younger brother
Richard Gordon MD in 2007. Then in 2009, after 59 years of marriage, he lost his wife Carole Inness Armstrong, an elementary school art teacher.

Since there was a need for radio operators during WWII, and because Hal already had an Amateur Ham Radio license (W2RLG) and mastered Morse code,
he obtained a commercial radiotelegraph license and sailed as one of the youngest officers in the U.S. Merchant Marine between his junior and senior year at
Samuel Gompers Technical HS, Bronx, and then sailed again after graduation. After a short stint at Bell Labs, he went on to work as the station engineer at
a number of radio and TV stations, and went on air as a DJ known as 'Uncle Hal' at radio station WXNJ Plainfield, NJ where he met his future wife, Carole.
He next served two years in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during the Korean War, followed by 30 years employed by the American Broadcasting Co. (ABC) in New York City, developing the first hand held broadcast TV camera, then later managing a technical development department. Hal and Carole raised their family in Old Bridge, then Matawan, before retiring and enjoying the wildlife while living on the water at the edge of the Croatan Forest in New Bern for 28 years. He was always an active Ham Radio operator, an avid boatman, and traveled with his young family in their RV to many national parks. After becoming an instrument rated pilot, Hal and Carole flew in their Cessna Cardinal to many remote locations departing from Marlboro Airport, NJ and later from New Bern. On Sunday mornings, he could always be found with his cat Max sitting on his lap, completing the entire NY Times crossword puzzle. While attending a bereavement session after his wife passed, he was so fortunate to meet dear Renate, who became his loving and constant companion for the next 6 years until he passed.

Surviving are his sons Eric of Ashland, OR; Stuart of Washington, DC; and Clifford and his wife Linda of Eatontown, NJ.

The cremation was handled by Cotten Funeral of New Bern, NC.

A good friend and fellow pilot at the airport. Always willing to help with radio or electronic problems. Sorry we didn't spend more time together.

So glad we got to speak on the phone again not too long ago and share laughs of the good ole days of ABC. We had such great memories. Will miss those calls. Rest in peace my friend.

Harold was my mentor and "Big Brother", always taking the time to answer a ten year old's questions about Radio and Electronics. Harold taught and encouraged me, and kindled an interest in Radio that developed into an engineering career and a 73 year friendship. I miss him already, not being able to telephone and talk about "The Old Days in The Neighborhood", Ham Radio, Politics, or just "chew the fat". We always enjoyed a good "QSO" (Ham lingo for a contact).
