Harold Kerlin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 16, 2009.
KERLIN HAROLD FREDERICK KERLIN Husband, father, grandfather, mentor and friend. Born October 31, 1943. Died unexpectantly at his home on March 11, 2009. He was a devoted husband, soul mate, and best friend to Annette Kerlin; a loving, supportive and doting father to Tamara Lynn Seal and Laura Lynn Kerlin; Dearest Grumpa and “biggest fan ever” of Tiffany Lynn Seal and Zachary Christopher Seal. Father-in-law, friend and mentor to Robert Randal Seal; brother of Haller Kerlin, Jr.; Beloved son of the late Haller and Kathryn Kerlin. Fred Kerlin was born and raised in Alexandria Virginia. He was an all-star baseball pitcher at George Washington High School whose love and tenacity for the game was lifelong. He never strayed far from the community he loved. He treasured his connection to Alexandria and gave back to it in service and devotion wherever he could. He was a man of such great presence. Fred Kerlin “the mushroom man”, founded Mid-Atlantic Distributors T/A Fred Kerlin‘s Mushrooms. Fred was a successful self-made businessman, who worked hard, played harder, loved deeply, joked loudly, danced passionately, gave generously and never knew a stranger. Whether you met him once or saw him every day, he welcomed you warmly and you felt forever connected. The Head Usher at Christ Church in Alexandria for so many years, his faith was deep and will be what sustains his family during this very difficult time. The celebration of Fred Kerlin‘s life will be held Tuesday, March 17, 2009, 11 a.m. at Christ Church, 118 N. Washington Street, Alexandria, Virginia 22314. Immediately following the service, the interment will be held in the church courtyard with a reception in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, his family requests that donations be made to Christ Church stating in the memo line - Fred Kerlin‘s Memorial Fund. Donations will support Fred‘s numerous charities, including children‘s services, the homeless, animal and wildlife preservation and the McLean Little League, to name only a few. His was a life lived well. He was a great man that will be missed forever.

A great trip to Atlantic City on our anniversary. Miss his laughter and genuine kindness.
I visited Christ Church last week and the family ushers are still ones that Fred trained. They shared that he taught them all they know about ushering! He is remembered by many in the Christ Church Congregation even after 14 years since his passing! It speaks volumes to what a great person he was and how many people he touched! God Bless Him.

Just came across this while looking into my next trip to Alexandria...been away 45 years, catching up.

No one mentioned that '64 GTO...first one in Alexandria to have one, tan, real beauty. Not close in HS (GW)as a classmate, but we play baseball together for many years from 13 through 18. One the championship with First Citizens in the Alexandria Junior League when we were 15. American Legion Post 24 came later. He was a great pitcher, very fast. Had those long arms...big stride...could really cut her loose. The Freddie I knew always had a smile, friendly...never heard him say an ill word about anyone. Glad to hear he "made it".

My prayers are with you and your family. Fred hired me back in 1998 and allowed me to learn so much by working for him-when he sold his Safeway business to Coosemans he promised me that I'd be fine....I didn't believe him at the time- but he was right, I'm still here doing what I did for him. He was a great man...He will be missed.

I am saddned by the loss of a man who was very special in my family life. I am grateful for having had the chance to be so close to him, especially as a child. I'm prayerful that I can give back to the Kerlins and my community in even a fraction of the way that Fred did.

I've been out of the country and just returned to learn of Freddie's death. I am shocked and saddened. I last saw Freddie at a class reunion. Like so many others, I remember him from GWHS...his energy, joy, and vitality. I know he never lost those qualities, because the short time I spoke with him at the class reunion he still demonstrated the same qualities. My heartfelt sympathy to his family.

Annette and Family: My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Fred was so genuine and full of love and life. He will be missed a great deal by a great many. As
Father Mark said: "Thank God for Fred." And I would add: "Thank God for allowing me the opportunity to know Fred." Please let me know if there is anything you need.

Annette and Family, Fred was one of the few real genuine people in our business. He always offered his help ( and daily humor ) to eveyone he met, especially to young people who were just starting out their careers. He will be truly missed.

Dear Annette and Family,
We will miss our brother-in-law very much. We did not get to visit with him very often, but when we did, I always remember his hearty laugh and curiosity to find out all the details about any story he was being told. Our family won't be the same without him. Many prayers and blessings go to you, Tammy, Laura, Randal, Tiffany and Zachary. We love you.

In the mid 80's , I got a phone call from Fred. He said, "I heard you were the best mushroom farmer in the country....I need to form a relationship with you to buy your mushrooms with my name, Fred Kerlin on the package." That joint venture is still going strong to this day. We talked everyday for over twenty years. Fred was like a second father to me and I will miss him very much.

Annette..Both Pat and I express our deepest sympathy to your loss. Although we only met Fred a couple of times, that was enough to know that he was a special person who celebrated life to its fullest and that he loved you, his family and friends, and his Church. That love will be his legacy.

March 27, 2009

Dear Annette and Family,
As Reverend Mark so beautifully stated, "Thank God for Fred." I will always remember his infectious laugh and generous spirit. I know his soul completes the trio at Christ Church; George Washington, Robert E. Lee, and Fred.

Annette,

You've always been there for me as part of my family, and Fred was right by your side for 24 years of my life. He's was a silly, sweet, caring person who added the flare and fun to anything we did together. My first pro sports events of all kinds happened with you, Fred, and your family... as well as pool parties and cook outs. I love you all, and him, very much.

Anyone who knew Fred, or who has heard of all the wonderful things he did for people, will never be able to forget him.

Fred, Semele, and I rode in space with John Glenn. He was very proud of that line, and it isn't forgotten. :-)

I love you!

March 26, 2009

Dear Annette and the Kerlin family -- We deeply admired Fred, his warmth, his generosity, his thorough and joyous commitment to the cause of Christ. He was a great encourager, friend and support to those of us in the church, and a leader by example, who acted out the Gospel in his warm greetings, tremendous generosity, and strong prayer life. The Randle family will miss him greatly. You are very much in our prayers. Faithfully, Russ Randle

Jack and I will always remember the "Mushroom Man" with great fondness. He livened our celebrations and brought laughter to all of us. Our wonderful memories are a great gift he gave to all of us! God Bless Annette and the family and know you are all in our thoughts and prayers.

March 26, 2009

It is rare that you meet a person with the zest for life, generous spirit, and love of humanity that Fred possessed. He has touched the hearts of many, and will be remembered by all that had the fortune to have known him.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort.
