Harold Mattatall Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 29, 2013.
Mattatall, Harold Boyd – 83, of Dartmouth. It is with profound sadness we, Harold's family, announce his passing on Sunday, January 27, 2013 in the Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Westchester Station he was a son of the late Absalom and Mary E. (Langille) Mattatall. Harold had a long distinguished career as a Funeral Director and followed in his father's footsteps as owner of A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home in Dartmouth. Harold served on many professional associations and committees including past president of both the Nova Scotia Funeral Directors Association and Funeral Association of Canada. For many years after his retirement Harold continued to stay involved with his profession as Inspector and Director for the Nova Scotia Board of Registration of Embalmers and Funeral Directors. Harold strongly believed in contributing to the community in which he resided. He was a chartered member and past president of Dartmouth Kinsmen Club, a member of the K40 club of Dartmouth and a member of the Austenville Owls Club. A superb handyman and carpenter, one of Harold's biggest accomplishments was when he turned his skills to boat building and constructed the "Free Time", a Cape Island style fishing boat. He and his wife Lorraine enjoyed many wonderful years as members of the Dartmouth Yacht Club, often cruising the harbour on "Free Time". An avid curler, Harold was a past president of the Dartmouth Curling Club. He even achieved the holy grail of curling, an "eight-ender". In recent years Harold taught himself how to play the bass guitar and was a valued member of the band "4-wheel Drive and Spares". Harold's closest band members will fondly remember him as CEO of the M3 Group. Surviving are his wife of 62 years Lorraine (DeYoung), daughters Gail, Deborah (Donald) Hall, son David (Elaine), sister Marilyn Langton, brother, Eugene (Barbara); his pride and joy grandsons Adrian (Chantelle), Derrick (CJ), Andrew (Nora) Dobson, Daniel (Jaycie) Mattatall; 3 great-grandsons Matthew, Oliver and Payson, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister Carrie Hatt, brother Leonard, and grandson James Mattatall. Visitation will be held Saturday, February 2, 2013, 2-4pm, 7-9pm in A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth. A memorial service will be held 2:30 pm Sunday, February 3, 2013 in St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 216 School Street, Dartmouth. Rev. Dr. P.A. Sandy McDonald officiating. Burial at a later date in Mount Hermon Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or to the NSCC Foundation for the James Mattatall Memorial Fund at PO Box 1153 Halifax NS B3V 2X1. Online condolences can be viewed or sent to www.mattatallfuneralhome.com.

So sorry to hear about Harold's passing. Its been a rather difficult year for the family. I remember him coming to my grandfather, Doug Totten's place and of course down at the Funeral Home and the Owl's Club. He was always so nice to me growing up and always had a smile on his face when I saw him. I remember a retirement party at their house when Gramp and Harold retired. Much laughter... My condolances to Lorraine, Debbie, Gail and David and family. It is a loss but he is now at peace.

Dear Lorraine, Debbie, Gail, David and family:
Harold always had a warm and friendly smile and manner that commanded attention. When we first came to Dartmouth and I as Chief Embalmer in 1979, the name Harold Mattatall in my mind was synonymous with "Superior Undertaking and Curling." It wasnt very long after that, we soon learned this had a whole new meaning to include, his love for family, friends, and his active involvement with the Kinsmen Club and the wonderful socializing at the Owl's Club, with lobster night included. His desire for perfection at work and in community outreach was second to none. Harold also taught me everything one should know about blueberry picking. :) The respect by his colleagues, friends and family is truly justified, as all held him in very high regard and so rightfully so by all who knew him. He has contributed so much to the Industry and its high standards that he will not soon be forgotten for those accomplishments. It has been both a privilege and an honor to have known and worked with Harold for those many years. I will always remember his generous smile, as he Captained, "Free Time", as we were so warmly escorted and chauffeured around Halifax Harbour on a staff night out. The comrauderie was truly awesome and his kindness was very much appreciated by all! Well done Harold! Till we meet again.. With sincere symapthy, respect and kind regards, Dale Jackson and family.

As many funeral directors and embalmers will recollect, it was Harold that was with them for their practical exams. I, too, was one of the lucky ones. Having Harold to come and observe you for your practical exams was an honour rather than something you were afraid of. Harold's quiet way put me at ease for both of my practicals. I won't forget my practical funeral director's examination. Harold and I were at a tiny church out in the country and for some reason I thought it was necessary to lock the funeral coach. When the pallbearers came out of the church with the casket and someone opened the back door, every alarm and light on that funeral coach screamed! (I don't think he docked me any points for that.) We always welcomed Harold into our funeral homes for his inspections. Although he had a job to do, he did it in such a way that was not intrusive while carrying on friendly chatter. It was always a pleasure to see Harold. I am glad that Harold was recognized at the Convention in Digby a few years ago for his contributions to funeral service. Recognition he no doubt would rather have shied away from, however, was very deserving of. I knew Harold best in a professional capacity and it was indeed a pleasure to know him. My sympathies go out to all of you.

Sincerely,
Bruce Varner
