Harold Sawler Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 13, 2011.
Harold Hall Sawler, age 94, of Dartmouth passed away December 12, 2011. Born in Dartmouth in 1917, he was the son of the late Percy and Jean (Ogilvie) Sawler and is the last surviving member of his immediate family. Having first attended Dartmouth town schools and Halifax County Academy, Harold graduated from Dalhousie University and Harvard University with a Masters of Arts and a Masters of Education degrees respectively. Harold taught in the Dartmouth schools system for over forty-five years. He was the Principal of Notting Park and Park Schools before becoming the inaugural Principal of Bicentennial School from 1951 until his retirement in 1982. Harold was an active member of Emmanuel Anglican Church, serving as organist and choir-master; the last few years, he was a member of Christ Church. He was very involved with the Nova Scotia Teachers Union and the Home and School Association. He was awarded with the Canadian Centennial Medal honouring Canadians who have provided valuable service to their country. An avid gardener, Harold drew great joy from cultivating a yard full of vegetables and flowers. Following his retirement from teaching, Harold and his wife wintered in Florida and Arizona. He loved to travel, and visited the Caribbean many times, along with trips to Britain, Europe, Scandinavia, Greece, Australia, New Zealand, China, Thailand, and Singapore. Although he suffered a major stroke twelve years ago, Harold was able to continue his love of travel. Harold was very dedicated to both his immediate and extended family and is survived by his devoted wife Kathleen (Hardy) and three sons of whom he was especially proud: John (Viive), Toronto; James, Dartmouth; and Robert (Sherri), Ottawa. Also surviving are his four adored grandchildren - Owen, Olivia, Nicola and Tessa - and a large number of nieces and nephews. Harold is predeceased by his three brothers - Owen, Percy and Reginald - and three sisters - Katherine Sorrentino, Alice Filie, and Myrtle Jean Munson. Visitation will be held at Mattatall's Funeral Home on Portland St. in Dartmouth on Thursday, December 15 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm and 6:00pm to 8:00pm . A memorial service will be held at Christ Church, Ochterloney St on Friday, December 16 at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial donation to your favourite charity.

What I think was most remarkable about Mr. Sawler was the fact that on the occasions when we crossed paths some 40 and 50 years after our days at BiHi, he remembered so many of us personally and eagerly sought information on our current status, a sign of his true involvement with his students and his having their best interests at heart. A remarkable gentleman and an extraordinary teacher whom we, who were objects of his influence, will never forget. My sincerest sympathy goes out to his family.

When I was hired by Dartmouth District, I was offered positions at any one of three schools. I chose BiHi, because I knew Mr. Sawler would be the best person to help a brand-new teacher. Little did I realize that I would stay at the school for 21 years! Since then, I have taught in another junior high, was VP in an elementary school, and spent nearly 12 years with the Department of Education. No matter where I went, I knew that without Mr. Sawler, my career would never have been so rewarding.
Kathleen, John, Jamie, and Robbie, please accept my condolences and know that you all are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Kathleen:
Harry and I were saddened to learn about Harold's death. You are in our thoughts and prayers as we sympathize with you and your family. I have such fond memories of Harold when I recall the years of teaching at the Bi Hi.

He was always such a strong support as principal, one we could depend upon for help and guidance---a good friend also whom we all admired.

How you will miss him!

The memories of your happy years together will be a comfort to you now.

Your boys, too, will be all the closer to you in the coming days.

Our loving concern,

Deeply saddened to hear of Mr. Sawler's passing. I went to Bi Hi in the late 70's early 80's and always found Mr. Sawler to be an extremely fair and compassionate man who truly cared about people. My condolences go out to his entire family.

Mr. Sawler was a most exceptional man in many respects. Surely there has never been a person with more dedication to his or her profession. Every December I remember with fondness him at the piano, leading the whole school in Christmas carols - something he seemed to enjoy every bit as much as the students. My sincere condolences to the Sawler family.

To the family of Mr. Sawler,

I was a student at Bi Hi for three years and graduated from grade 9 in June 1980.

My recollections of Mr. Sawler were that he was strict, high expectations, no nonsense and the BEST teacher I have every had !! I was in Grade 9 A so Mr. Sawler was my math teacher. I remember the daily 'fundamentals' that if you got any wrong you were required to stay after school. I became an accountant and I owe it to him. My sisters (2 of them that also were in grade 9A so went through the joyful daily fundamentals) and I speak about him to this day at least a half dozen times a year. It is always about how pathetic the current math knowledge is of teenagers (our kids being some of them) when they can not quickly answer multiplications / additions etc by memory. If you have ever asked a young store clerk to calculate out what 30% off something is then you know what I mean……..they would need to pull out their cell phones to do so. We always comment how we were lucky to have had Mr Sawler.

He worked us hard and produced high functioning mental math kids as a result. I only wish that the schools would continue to operate this way.

Today at my youngest child's school, they are going to spend the afternoon in the gym singing Christmas carols. I always remember Mr. Sawler when they do this because when I was in Junior High at Bicentennial, for the last week of school, we would all go to the gym and Mr. Sawler would play the piano while the classes took turns choosing Carols to sing. He was very good.

I have a feeling that I am only one of many that will continue to think of Mr. Sawler fondly throughout the rest of my life.

Mr. Sawler was an incredible educator! My memories of him at Bicentennial include his teaching me in Math and Latin. I fondly think of him each Christmas season, remembering school assemblies to sing carols as he played the piano. I also got to know his young sons at Sunday School at Emmanuel Church.
Mr. Sawler was a firm, fair and focused teacher and principal. He inspired me to become a lifelong learner and to encourage my son and grandchildren to be the same.

A man who truly understood and communicated the secrets of math. A fine gentleman of the "old school" who inspired so many of his students to go on to university and succeed in life. Always fondly remembered when old students run into each other.

Mr. Sawler was great, more than great as he taught us many things besides the subject of the day. He spoke of an American pianist he admired, Van Cliburn. He had just won (1958) the first International Piano Competition at 23 in Moscow playing I think, Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto # 1. When Mr. Sawler played a recording of the piece for us in a Math class it was magical. One of those teachers you learned "stuff" from. Rev. David Chisling, Ontario

I moved to Dartmouth part way through my Grade 9 year and wound up in Grade 9B at the old Bi-Hi; needless to say I had Mr. Sawler for math that year. I graduated from Dalhousie with a degree in applied math and computing science (some 30 years ago now). And to this day
