Harriet Karlsond was born on March 13, 1929 in Schwerin/Mecklenburg, in East Germany and died on 20 August, 2016 in Indiana University Hospice House, as a result of complications from vascular dementia.
Harriet's parents were Ernst Christian Karlsond and Bertha Meyer Karlsond. She is predeceased by her siblings, Fritz, Bona and Klaus.
She is survived by her husband, George, daughter, Patricia (husband Joseph Bentley), daughter Alexandra (husband Richard Pike), son Robert (wife Lisa Gill) and grandchildren Hayden and Charlotte.
Harriet graduated from the State Conservatory of Music in Schwerin as an opera singer and started her first engagement at the Schwerin Opera House. She went on to engagements in the opera houses of Luebeck, Mannheim and Hanover. She also had numerous guest appearances in the opera houses of Berlin, Paris, Munich, Stuttgart and Hamburg.
In 1967 she moved to Bloomington, Indiana, to join her husband at Indiana University and she subsequently taught voice at Indiana State University, in Terre Haute, for fifteen years, commuting from Bloomington.
She loved gardening, flowers, painting, her cat and dog and her family and friends. She will be sorely missed by family and many, many friends.
