Harrison Coleman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 3 to Apr. 5, 2008.
COLEMAN – Harrison McKinley Jr. was born Aug. 11, 1942, in Johnstown, to the late Marie Esther (Borders) Coleman and Harrison Coleman Sr. He entered into eternal rest on Saturday, March 29, 2008, at Beth Israel Hospital, Newark, N.J. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ronald; sister, Kaye; and nephew, Carlos Sr. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army and served his term with the 101st Airborne Division in Fort Campbell, Ky. After serving his term with the Army, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service, serving as director of the Newark Postal Academy. He later joined the Newark Police Department, where he worked for 29 years and retired as sergeant. His last employment was as an investigator with Essex County College, where he worked until his death. Harrison accepted Christ at an early age. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Johnstown. After relocating to New Jersey, he attended several churches before joining Grace Reformed Baptist Church under the pastorship of the Rev. Levin West. He was ordained as deacon on July 25, 1999, and served as president of the deacon board until his death. He leaves to cherish his memories his beloved daughter, Marcia Karen Coleman, New Jersey; beloved sisters, Alfrieda Coleman, Newark, N.J.; Joann Coleman, Detroit; and Karen Coleman, Antioch, Calif.; brothers, Frederick Coleman, San Francisco, and Robert Coleman, Oakland, Calif. Also survived by three nephews, Eric Coleman Sr., Detroit; Obgonna Coleman, Oakland; and Kevin Coleman, Antioch, Calif.; a very special niece, Camille Coleman, Newark; two great-nephews, Carlos Coleman Jr., Denver, and Eric Coleman Jr., Detroit; beloved cousin, Mary Jackson, Newark, whom he fondly called “Totsie”; and a host of cousins to whom he was a father figure. He also leaves a beloved friend, Lillian Jones, special friends, a godson, several surrogate children and his faithful church members who never failed to come and visit him, as well as the many lives he touched in his passing. He was truly loved by everyone, the young and the old. As Harrison has blessed us, may God continue His blessings on us all.

I was sadden to hear of the home going of Harry. I worked with him at the Newark Police Department,(Forensic Department) and you couldn't ask for a better boss. He was a wonderful person, and there wasn't anything he wouldn't do for you. There will be a void in all our lives. You and your family will be in my prayers.

Frieda and Family

May the love of GOD and friends carry you through your sorrow. I am so pleased that Darlene and I were able to make it there to be with you during your time of sorrow. Rest assured that Harry is in a better place and the void you're feeling will close with time. His time here on earth is memorable and he touched many lives in so many different ways. I remember seeing and talking with him in Aug 2007 while he was in the hospital. I spite of what he was going through he still had a positive attitude and was always a joy to talk with in his soft spoken manner. More of us could use him as an example. You know if you need anything I'm a phone call/email away. GOD BLESS YOU and your family.

To Freida and Family:
I share in the sympathy in the loss of your loved one, and I know right now it seems so hard to wrap your head around all that has happened, but I have found out that when things seem overwhelming and totally out of our control, all we have to do is seek the ONE who is sovereign and has everything under HIS control. HE has everything that we need and does not hold back from giving it to us. In times such as these, "Call upon HIM and HE will show you great and mighty things that you don't know of" to help you make it through. May GOD continue to bless your family richly and give the JOY, PEACE and LOVE that can only come through HIM to you to help you both now and forever. To everything there is a season.
Yakey was here for his season, his work down here is down. He has moved on up a little higher and his victory is won.

InJoy, InPeace, InLove, INHIM!!!
