Harrison Waldo Maycroft

MAYCROFT — Mr. Harrison Waldo Maycroft, aged 85, formerly of Muskegon, passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2003 at "The Sailors' Snug Harbor", a retirement complex for seamen at Sea Level, N.C. He was born May 31, 1918 to Harrison and Grace (Ward) Maycroft, the eldest of seven children. He joined the U.S. Merchant Marines in 1936, retiring as a Captain in 1969. He served his country during W.W.II and from 1961-64 was Captain of the largest oil tanker in the world, the "National Defender". He was a member of the Masters, Mates and Pilots Union. "Harry" was well known for his many stories about his world-traveled maritime adventures. He married Gladys (Bhud-hiwanti) Singh in Bombay, India and she predeceased him January 26, 1996. Mr. Maycroft leaves five sons, Arthur (Irene) Maycroft of Comstock Park, MI, Richard Maycroft of San Francisco, CA, Charles (Teresa) Maycroft of Grand Rapids, MI, Allen (Sherri) Maycroft and Daniel Maycroft of Killeen, TX; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Farran-Frizzell of Muskegon; three brothers, Eugene (Alice) Maycroft and Glenn (Betty) Maycroft of Muskegon, Ronald (Jeanne) Maycroft of Norton Shores; and many nieces and nephews. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
