A native of Lake City, he was the husband of Hazel Holland Belk and the son of the late Milton Woods Belk and Eva Godwin Belk. He graduated from Lake City High School and Wofford College in the class of 1943. He attended Duke University until he entered the U.S. Navy. He received his commission at Northwestern University in Chicago and served in the Mediterranean Theatre with action in Italy and the invasion of Southern France in World War II. He was honorably discharged at the end of 1945 at Lt. JG and entered law school at the University of South Carolina. For the next twenty years, he was an agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, serving in Washington, D.C., Detroit, Philadelphia, Charleston and Cincinnati, with many letters of commendation from J. Edgar Hoover. After retiring in 1970, he formed the law firm Belk, Cobb, Infinger and Goldstein in Charleston.
Mr. Belk was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Charleston, serving on the Finance Committee for many years. He was active in the Wofford Alumni Association and a member of the Kiwanis Club of North Charleston.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three children, Dr. Harry Clinton Belk, Jr., and his wife Ann, of Spartanburg, Elizabeth Belk Smith and her husband, Lee, of Churchville, Maryland, and Roger Wesley Belk of Charleston. He is also survived by his sister, Gladys Belk Blackmon, and her husband the Reverend Charles Blackmon, four grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 23, 2003 at Floyd's Greelawn Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Cooper Stonestreet. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Following the services the family will be at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Harry Clinton Belk, Jr., 335 Montgomery Drive, Spartanburg, SC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wofford College, 429 N. Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29303; to Grace United Methodist Church, 1601 Sam Rittenburg Blvd., Charleston, SC 29407; or to Moblie Meals, P. O. Box 461 Spartanburg, SC 29304.
