Harry Greenwald
Harry was born in Vienna, Austria, to Zoltan and Lottie Grunwald in February 1933. He survived the Holocaust by relocating in 1938 first to Poland and then settled in Tashkent, Russia, with his mother, Lottie, maternal grandparents and two aunts who helped raise him. After the war, he returned to Vienna where he was reunited with his father, Zoltan, and stepmother, Kate.
He came to America through Ellis Island in 1951 and became a naturalized citizen, settling in New York City's east side. He was later reunited with his birth mother who was still living in Russia in 1964.
Harry was drafted into the army as an interpreter in 1952 and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. In 1958 he married the love of his life, Lisa Hauser. Set up on a blind date, he proposed to her on their third date. They would have celebrated their 64th anniversary in August.
After leaving the army, Harry worked in a factory during the day and studied mechanical engineering at CCNY at night for both his undergrad and graduate degrees. His first engineering position was at the Ideal Clamp Company, designing high-speed automation machines. In 1974 he took a job at Bic corporation and moved to Milford, CT. In 1987 he took a position at Emson Corporation, where he worked until retiring.
He was the devoted father of Linda (Mark) Caplan, Michael (Robin) Greenwald, and Tom (Lynda) Greenwald. He was a loving opa to Matt, Hannah and Leah Caplan, Emily, Jacob Anna, Tyler, Brayden and Spencer Greenwald. He was an avid stamp collector and loved bowling. He enjoyed watching sports, especially the Mets and Jets. He will be missed by all who knew him
Funeral Services will be held at Or Shalom Cemetery, Farwell St., West Haven, on Friday morning July 22, at 10:30 am. The Robert E. Shure & Son Funeral Home, New Haven, is in care of Arrangements. Shiva will be observed Sunday at 6:00 pm, at the home of Harry's daughter, Linda and Mark Caplan, 35 Laurelwood Drive, Wallingford, CT. Memorial Contributions may be sent to Cong.
