Harry Race Obituary

Harry Race
Harry Race, devoted husband and father, passed away peacefully at home on April 15, 2011 with loved ones at his side in Solvang, California.
He was born on January 19, 1931 in Staindrop, England to Laura and Lancelot Race. After graduating from King James I Grammar School in Bishop Auckland, England, he served 2 years in the Royal Air Force. He met the love of his life; Doreen (Dene) Brown in 1952 and they married in her hometown of Darlington, England in 1953. They immigrated to the United States in 1955, settling in California to start their new life and raise a family. Harry's aptitude for numbers steered him towards a highly successful career in accounting and finance. He worked in private accounting in the city of Pasadena before relocating his family to Santa Barbara in 1970. He joined the medical research firm, Heyer-Schulte Medical Corporation and was instrumental in the development and sale to American Hospital Supply. Harry was able to retire at the age of 45.
Over the next 30 plus years, he and Dene were able to cruise and explore the world. They traveled endlessly to far away places where they developed lifetime friends and shared wonderful memories. Another passion of Harry's was thoroughbred horses and horse racing. A dream since childhood was fulfilled in 1987 when he built a small horse farm, raced horses and moved to the gorgeous Santa Ynez Valley - which he called home ever since.
Mr. Race is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Dene Race; two daughters and their spouses: Yvonne and Greg Lowe of Santa Ynez, California and Dianne and Paul Kerkar of Portland, Oregon; three grandchildren: Laura Lowe, Cameron Kerkar and Anthony Kerkar; as well as nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his three sisters and his brother.
The family expresses their deep gratitude for the care and compassion of those who lovingly cared for him in his final months. We are forever grateful to Diana, Rosa and Visiting Nurses & Hospice Care of Santa Barbara.

Uncle Harry, Aunt Dene and Cousin Yvonne have made some of the strongest impressions on my life - from wonderful storytelling, amazing hospitality, kindness, inviting me into their home to live temporarily...to sharing the history of my family, supporting me in life accomplishments and milestones and showing genuine, unconditional love. I am so grateful for Uncle Harry's role in my life. He will be deeply missed and remembered with warmth and a smile forever. My heart goes out to Aunt Dene, Yvonne, Greg, Laura, the Kerkar family and all our family and friends who grieve over the loss of such a great man. All my love, Jilly
