Harry Herbert Schueneman, Jr., passed away at home, Thursday, March 4, 2010, with members of his family present.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, 11:30 A.M. Monday March 8, 2010 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 555 E. Delaware, with Fr. William J. Jacobs, Jr. officiating, assisted by Msgr. Eugene Sears. Visitation will be at Starks and Menchinger Family Funeral Home on Sunday, March 7, 2010 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, where the Rosary will be recited at 6:00 pm. Harry was born on January 12, 1917 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Harry and Naomi (Servatius) Schueneman. Harry graduated from St. Barnabas grade school and St. Leo High School in Chicago, Illinois. On March 22, 1939 Harry married Leona Walsh and together they celebrated 66 years of marriage. Trained as a Draftsman, he worked for International Harvester and Ford Motor Co. before moving to Benton Harbor and operating a fruit farm at Spinks Corners for 46 years. Harry also owned and operated a piano tuning and repair business in Southwestern Michigan. Harry loved to play the piano and often entertained family and friends, and played for the Knights of Columbus at their Christmas parties. Harry enjoyed watching the Cubs and the Bears on the television and was an avid racquetball player. He enjoyed playing cards and dominoes with friends and family. With his dear wife, Leona, Harry traveled often to Baldwin, Michigan, where they owned a cottage and enjoyed many friends and activities at their lake property. Together, he and Leona made several religious pilgrimages to Medjugorje, Yugoslavia. His greatest joy was visiting with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved to attend the family reunion and celebrate with his growing family.
Harry was a 70 year member of the Knights of Columbus, a charter member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Parish, was totally devoted to his faith and attended daily Mass. Harry is survived by 11 children:
Richard Schueneman, Thomas (Martha) Schueneman, Suellen (Michael) Siglow, James (Elaine) Schueneman of Benton Harbor, Mary Kathryn (Lawrence) Spitzley of Holland, Michigan, Herbert (Adrian)Schueneman of Monterey, California, William (Pamela) Schueneman of Woodstock, Georgia, Joseph (Robin) Schueneman of Middlebury, Indiana, John (Elizabeth) Schueneman of St. Joseph, George (Teresa)Schueneman of Stevensville and Luis Diaz of Niles Michigan; 42 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two beloved nephews, Jerry (Alison) Schueneman of St. Simons Island, Georgia and Ronald (Nancy) Schueneman of Hurst, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Naomi, his wife Leona,his brother, Arthur Schueneman of Chicago and Florida, and two grandsons, Jacob Potter and Lucas Potter of Benton Harbor.
Memorials may be made to Lake Michigan Catholic Schools and the Knights of Columbus.
