Harvey Wood

Augusta - Harvey "Pete" Wood, a lifelong resident of Fairfield Center, Maine, passed from this earth on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, in Augusta, Maine, surrounded by his girls and sons.

Born on May 11, 1934, in the very home where he would spend his entire life, Pete was the son of George Prescott Wood and Hazel Ardis (Robinson) Wood. Deeply rooted in the land and community that shaped him, Pete dedicated his life to running the family farm with steadfast commitment and pride.

In 1952, Pete's dedication to agriculture earned him recognition as Maine Star Farmer. He traveled to Kansas City, Missouri, where President Dwight D. Eisenhower personally presented him with the award.

Beyond farming, Pete and his crew cut and hauled wood to mills all across Maine. He was an active member of several local organizations over the years, including the Skowhegan Sportsman Club, Waterville Elks Lodge, Fairfield Center Grange Rifle Club, and the Fairfield Masons.

Pete was predeceased by his parents; his sisters Mary Levine Wolfe, Lilla Julia, Barbara Alley Wade, and Ima Fales; and his son-in-law Eddie Schaefer.

He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Joyce (Grant) Wood. Together they built a large and loving family that includes their children: John Wood, Michael Wood, George Wood, Robert Wood (Karen), Michelle Wood, Andrew Wood (Melissa), Joyce Cook (Stephen Mattox), and Ann Wood. Pete also leaves behind grandchildren Jonathan Tracey; Matthew Wood; Kathryn Wood; Lianna Fagan (Jason); Derek Wood; Travis Wood; Ryan Wood (Lindsey); Heidi Kitchen (Jason); Alex Juarez; Kelsey Wood; Andy Wood; and Emma Cook-as well as numerous great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, and in-laws who will carry forward his memory.

In his younger years Pete found joy in hunting and fishing throughout the Maine woods he loved so dearly. He cherished time spent outdoors with friends, often gathering around a tailgate to shoot the breeze. Pete was a lifelong fan of the Patriots and Celtics-and maintained a loyal if exasperated affection for "those bums," the Red Sox.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Pete's memory to the Fairfield Center United Methodist Church.

Pete's legacy lives on through those who knew him best. May his memory bring comfort to all whose lives he touched. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at 3:00 PM at Fairfield Center United Methodist Church at the Corner of Routes 104 & 23.
