Haydée Cruz Perez Cepero Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 19, 2025.
With profound sadness and enduring admiration, the family of Haydée Cruz Perez Cepero announce her passing on April 14, 2025, at the age of 86, in Scottdale, Pennsylvania, a rural community outside of Pittsburgh where she passed peaceful with family at her side.

Born on June 28, 1938, in Florencia, Cuba, Haydée lived a life marked by courage, resilience, and deep love - for her family, for freedom, and for her homeland. In 1972, determined to give her family a life beyond the grip of communism, she fled Cuba alongside her beloved husband, Pablo Cruz, and their young son, Pablo Manuel Cruz (spouse of Joel Rodríguez Riveron). Their journey first took them to Madrid, Spain, where Haydée worked with Pablo to grow his family portrait photography business and secure a better future.

In 1974, they arrived in Miami, Florida as political refugees, where they began building a new life from scratch. Just a few years later, in 1977, they welcomed their daughter, Betty Haydée Cruz, and in 1979, opened their first Cuban restaurant, La Complaciente, in the heart of Little Havana. What began as a humble establishment, quickly became a cornerstone of the community.

Haydée was a force, known for her unwavering standards in cleanliness, customer service, and quality. Her regular patrons became extended family, following the family's journey from Little Havana to Hialeah, West Miami, and finally Pablo's Café in Sweetwater. At each location, Haydée brought warmth, discipline, and her signature blend of charm and determination.

In addition to being a lifelong small business owner, Haydée was also deeply involved in her community through her faith. A devout Catholic, she found peace and spiritual refuge at both St. Agatha Catholic Church and Ermita de la Caridad. For many years, she and Pablo volunteered at St. Agatha, helping to manage the church bookstore - reflecting her deep commitment to service, devotion, and love for her parish.

Beyond her work ethic and faith, Haydée was a devoted mother, wife, and patriot. Her love for her family in Cuba-many of whom were unable to leave-remained constant. She supported them however she could, never forgetting the struggles they faced under the regime she so passionately opposed.

Haydée was a fierce anti-Castro advocate, deeply rooted in her belief in freedom and human dignity. When she married Pablo, she made one request: that her children never be raised in Castro's Cuba. That conviction led Pablo to endure two years of forced labor to obtain permission for the family to leave the island. Haydée carried this passion for liberty throughout her life as a frequent attendee of civic events, always advocating for a free and democratic Cuba, and honoring both current and past political prisoners.

She is survived by her children Pablo Manuel and Betty Haydée, her extended family, and a community that will forever cherish her memory.

A celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday, April 22 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery, located at 11411 NW 25th St, Doral, FL 33172.

It´s with much sorrow, but eternal gratitude that I remember my godmother today! I cannot properly express how much her (and Pablo, Sr.´s) love and generosity helped a young family such as mine find their way in our early days!
