My thoughts and prayers are with the Hyman family. I found it fitting that UNC beat Duke this past weekend too. But there are three things I will always remember about Haywood Hyman: 1. How well he and my parents (Maurice and Ann) got along and enjoyed life. 2. Our morning walks from the Holiday Inn at Pimlico over to the morning workouts. 3. The time Clarke, Tim Cates and I drove to Penn National to bet a tip horse called fittingly One's Chief and he won. I remember I was either 16 or 17 and drove back to the Holiday Inn to a celebration that you would never believe. It was the same weekend that Mr. Hyman introduced me to Joe Hirsch of the Daily Racing Form, and it was then I said what a great gig - covering horse racing for a living. All of these were just great times, and I remember them today with great fondness.

What a wonderful person! Mr. Hyman maintained a youthful enthusiasm for life and an optimistic outlook that was absolutely contagious. He was the consummate gentleman who made sure you always felt welcome in his company. He showed respect for all people, no matter what their station in life might be. He was decisive and competitive, and one could feel his eagerness to accomplish a goal. Many of us who were fortunate to grow up alongside his children got a glimpse of a natural and humble leader, who passionately loved his family, his work, his faith, his many friends, his walks and, of course, his Tar Heels. I am forever grateful for his example.

What a joy Mr. Hyman brought to our world. He brought smiles and joy in this life. with his love and compassion for others. May his spirit live on in his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great children. May they continue to tell the many wonderful stories of their very special father and grandfather. May he Rest in Peace and God comfort and bless his loving family for their dedication to his care as age took its toll on his body but not his spirit.
