Hazel Smith, 91, a 71 year resident of Ontario and Alta Loma, passed away peacefully on April 29th, 2008. She is survived by her son, Michael Reed (Sandra Reed) of Upland, grandson Michael Reed (Crystal Reed) and great-grandchildren Karina and Korey Reed of Alta Loma. Grandsons David and Danny Sheffield, 2 great-grandsons and 1 great-great grandson all of Albuquerque, New Mexico and brother Ray Niblett of San Jacinto. She is preceded in death by her husband Lt. Harley "Smitty" Smith of the Ontario Police Department and daughter Glenita Sheffield. Mrs. Smith is the daughter of Jessie and Bessie Niblett of Anadarko, OK, one of the first families to s ettle in the Oklahoma territory. Born on August 21, 1916, the only daughter with 5 brothers, she learned how to take care of them and help on the ranch. She walked miles each day to attend school on the Indian Reservation. Once moving to California, she worked at the first Orange packing plant in Ontario, for Safeway and Market Basket Grocers, Hillcrest Homes and volunteered at San Antonio Hospital for many years. She has been a devoted member of the First Baptist Church for 49 years and a Sunday school t eacher for 47 years. She was inducted into the church's "Hall of Fame" for her teachings and years of service. She has been a member of the P.E.O. QU for 30 years. Over the years Mrs. Smith has served in each responsible office of the P.E.O. Chapter including President from 1983 to 1985. Mrs. Smith has been dedicated to the P.E.O. cause, which is helping to provide scholarships to women in need all over the world. Her sisterhood has been an inspiring and enjoying time in her life. Mrs. Smith has been a member of the Copperate Policemen's Wives Organization for 48 years and has served in all five offices including the President. She has always been so proud to be a part of this organization over the years. Her favorite times were camping, fishing and traveling all over the country with her husband Smitty. Traveling on historical site seeing trips with her daughter Glenita. Spending time with her great-grandchildren and family. She loved going to lunch with friends and enjoyed the wonderful conversation. She was interested in the news, world occurrences and reading biographies about the amazing women throughout history. Her spryness and high level of energy over the years, kept everyone trying to keep up with her. Her wonderful sense of humor and enjoyment made everyone around her laugh and feel at home. She also had a giant sweet tooth and all that knew her loved to watch her devour her sweets. The happiness of her family and friends was most important to her. Her huge heart and kind nature showed in eve rything she did. Just to spend time talking with her was an honor and knowledgeable experience. She always had time for friends and loved ones, her love made you feel strong, important and special. Her way of looking at the world in a positive and beautiful way, made you do the same. It is comforting for her family to know that she is with God and her husband the love of her life, her daughter that she has been so lost without, granddaughter and 4 brothers. Memorial services will be held on Thursday, May 8th, 2008 at 10:30 am at Draper Funeral Home located at 811 N. Mountain Ave, Ontario.
