Helen Ayers Obituary

Helen Marie Brennan Ayers, 80, an Olympia resident for the last 3 years, died Friday, Nov. 1st at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia. She was born Jan. 9, 1922 in Pocatello, Idaho to Thomas and Leonilla Brennan. She was raised in Aberdeen and graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1939 and the University of Washington in 1943 with a degree in Communications. She went on to receive her Masters Degree in Dramatic Arts in 1971 at California State University in San Jose, Calif. Mrs. Ayers lived in Los Altos, Calif and Gearhart, Ore. before returning to Aberdeen in 1984. Mrs. Ayers worked at radio station KXA in Seattle as a war-time reporter in 1944-1945; she interviewed returning Pacific Theatre Marine Captain James Henry Ayers in Bremerton at the end of World War II. They were engaged to be married in 1946 and did so on June 1, 1946 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Aberdeen. In the seventies and eighties, she taught theatre and journalism at several colleges in Northern California as well as Astoria, Ore. Mrs. Ayers was in the Delta Delta Delta sorority at the University of Washington. She was a former member of St. Aurilla's Guild and Review Club in Aberdeen, member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Olympia and formerly a long-time member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Aberdeen. She enjoyed interior design and received certification from N.Y.U. in 1964. Mrs. Ayers is survived by her son, James R. Ayers of San Diego, Calif.; daughters, Leonilla E. Ayers of San Diego and Alecia M. Ayers of Irvine, Calif.; grandsons, Patrick & Brendan Erickson of San Diego; brothers, James P. Brennan of Seattle and Thomas B. Brennan of Aberdeen. Her sister, Alice Jane McKisson preceded her in death. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 5th, 1:00 pm at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Aberdeen. The Committal Service will follow at Fern Hill Cemetery in Aberdeen. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Mary's Feed the Hungry Program, 306 E. Third St., Aberdeen, WA 98520. Arrangements are by Whiteside Family Mortuary in Aberdeen.
