HELEN OKELBERRY Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 2 to Aug. 16, 2009.
Helen Ridges Okelberry 1910 ~ 2009 Helen Ridges Okelberry passed away peacefully on Pioneer Day, July 24, 2009 in Las Cruces, NM where she had been residing with her daughter, Jean Hill. She was born May 30, 1910 to Alfred Joseph Ridges and Edna Hyde Ridges. She was the great-granddaughter of Pres. John Taylor and Orson Hyde. She married Alfred Moyle Okelberry on September 2, 1932 in the Salt Lake Temple. She was devoted to this gentle, kind-hearted, brilliant surgeon. While he was away caring for others, she occupied herself with quilt-making and beautiful needlework projects. Her hand knit Christmas stockings are treasured by each child and grandchild. Helen had a spirit of loving kindness and was known for her ready smile, pleasant disposition and willingness to serve others. She loved gathering her family together and was famous for her tart lemon pies and homemade ice cream. She had a wide range of interests-from basketball to ballet, football to fugues, swimming to symphony. She was the first to reach the 500-mile goal at the Deseret Gym Pool and was often seen bicycling on her three-wheeler along the Avenues. In her earlier years she rode in the Silver Spurs horseback riding club. She loved tending her beautiful rose gardens which are still blooming. She lived a happy, contented life. Helen was a member of the DUP, Ladies Literary Club, and officer in the County and State Medical Auxiliary groups, a 24+ year volunteer at Primary Children's Medical Center and a expert bridge player. She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in a variety of callings. Along with her husband, she served a mission at the visitor center in Nauvoo, Illinois in 1972-73. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, husband and son, Carl. She is survived by her daughters, Joan Clissold and Jean Hill (R. Dean), her daughter-in-law, Doreen Maxfield, 12 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 17th at 12 noon at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple. Family and friends may call from 10:30-11:45 a.m. prior to the services. Interment will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery. We are grateful to our wonderful mother who has left us with a legacy of testimony, service and love.

Dearest Grandma,

It has been a little over a month since you passed and we've all had the opportunity to share our most precious memories of you at your memorial. (You looked so lovely and peaceful when I saw you.) I learned things about you I'd never heard before like wall paper cleaning to Swan Lake and your amazing swimming accomplishments. We all remember swinging on the patio, your amazing crafts, spaghetti omlet, homemade breads, lemon pies and ice cream. We loved that you rode your tricycle around the neighborhood and had such and adventurous spirit. You were a kind hearted woman with incredible strengths. We are all so grateful for your loving legacy. Your Christ-like example is one that I truly admire and hope to be like as well...

Jean, Joan and my mom, Doreen have been sorting through the items at your home and are sharing with us the treasures you've kept over the years. Thank you for your memoirs and generosity. We cherish these things so much. I am fortunate to have been given your three stoned ruby and gold ring. I feel it's a beautiful reminder of you and your inner strength. It even has a red thread stuck in it that I imagine came from one of your favorite red dresses. :o)

I love and miss you wholeheartedly, Grandma. I know we will all be together again, someday.

"I'll be seeing you..."

Love always,

Kirsten

I didn't know until today that your dear mother had passed away. I loved her so much. So did Mom. I lost mom last year and it has a left a void. I know how close you and your mother were. My heart goes out to you.

Dear Joan & Jean and family, My memories of her are very fond. I would often see her in the pool at the Deseret Gym. She was a strong swimmer and a person with many accomplishments. It is interesting also that she and my Mother Lucile both passed away at age 99. They were a strong generation. Know that our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Love, Don (and Nola)Swenson

My condolences to Joan and Jean and Family. I can envision the great reunion with your father and Carl. I can also see the group there to greet her (Ruth Cutler, Gwen Shurtliff, Mildred Sloan and others). She was an inspiration to all. God Bless her memory. If I don't make it to the later viewing, take notice that I went Monday to Larkins and was told it was two weeks away; however I wasn't the only one who didn't read carefully!

To a wonderful great grandmother whom I have cherished over the years. I hope to be able to pass on to my girls what she meant to me. I feel privileged to have been able to know her for so long and for my little girls to have known her as well even if only for a short time.

I used to play bridge with Helen in the 1970's along with Ellen Crockett and a gal named Jen. We shared many good times. I have wondered through the years where Helen was etc. She was a lovely lady. Please accept my deepest sympathy.
