Helen Stegmeier Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 12 to May 13, 2023.
STEGMEIER - Helen M. (Feb 8, 1935 - May 11, 2023) of Winter Haven, FL (formerly of Massapequa, NY and New Fairfield, CT). Pre-deceased by Erich, her cherished husband of 59 years in 2018, and her sister, Jean DeGaetan in September 2022. Doting mother of Andrea Stegmeier-Ulinski of Fort Myers, FL (husband Mark), and Laura Stegmeier-Pettinato of Winter Haven, FL. A loving, tender, "second mother" grandmother to her adoring grandchildren Logan Pettinato (Portland, ME) and Hayley Pettinato (Winter Haven, FL).

Helen graduated as salutatorian from Prospect Heights High School in 1953 and received her B.A. (Magna cum Laude & Phi Beta Kappa) from Brooklyn College in 1957. She furthered her education, obtaining a Masters of Science in Education from Brooklyn College in 1963. She met her husband, Erich, when both taught at P.S. 125 in Brownsville, NY. Their relationship was a "love at first sight" scenario, with them being engaged within 3 months of meeting. She left teaching to devote her life and time to raising her two little girls. She was a model mother for decades - loving, smart, entertaining, generous, sweet, and kind.

She invested the same time and energy in the upbringing of her grandchildren as she did her own children, always believing that there were new things to be learned by anyone, of any age, every single day. While a stroke robbed her of some physical capabilities in 2015, a second stroke in 2023 significantly impacted her daily life and routine. Throughout her life, Helen loved spending time with her beloved (yet small) family, traveling, playing Scrabble, eating fine food, doing crosswords and other puzzles, reading, and watching classic movies. Helen also enjoyed the awe and beauty that nature offered to her every day and had a deep love of animals and her pets.

The family wishes to extend deepest gratitude to the entire staff at Home Instead in Winter Haven, FL., and Vitas Hospice, who were here at home with her and us until her passing. Viewing will be private, family only. However, a Celebration of Life and butterfly release will be held at daughter Laura's home on Sunday, May 21, 2023. Contact family for details.

Helen indeed was a devoted wife, a loving mom, & grandma to all her family. Always helpful, supportive & giving in nature.

My first impression of her near 30 years ago was of June Cleaver from the tv series, Leave It To Beaver. She was soft spoken, dressed similarly w/ her pearl necklace, & always had a kind, truly interested demeanor. She was a dignified lady from her era.
The love & teachings Helen passed on to my dear friend, her daughter, Laura, was highly visible in the painstaking long term caregiving required to ease her mother in every way. In current times, it is less common to see such honor & sacrifice passed down to the next generation. Helen gave love, & it was appropriately given back to her. Rest In Peace knowing this Helen.

Mrs. Helen was a jewel. Such a beautiful spirit. She loved her classic movies and I became a lover of them following her. I will truly miss her. My deepest condolences to the family.
