Helen was born in Manilla, Iowa. She received her education in the Denison Community High School, graduating with the class of 1941. After graduation, she continued her education at the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She then served her country as a nurse in the United States Army. After receiving her Honorable Discharge in 1946, she worked at the VA Hospital in Chicago for 3 years before returning to Iowa. On February 13, 1950, she was united in marriage to Joseph White at St. Ann Catholic Church in Vail. This union was the last wedding to be celebrated at the old church. The couple settled in Westside and was blessed with three beautiful children.
Her professional career in nursing continued as she served St. Anthony's Hospital in Carroll and the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison for several years. She also served as a Public Health Nurse in Crawford County for fourteen years before retiring.
She was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother. She was sincere in her Christian faith as evidenced in her confident and happy spirit. Some of her favorite activities included socializing with family and friends, playing cards, gardening in both her vegetable and flower gardens, china painting and collecting elephants. She enjoyed golfing and in earlier years, horseback riding. She liked music and dancing. In her leisure time, she enjoyed traveling, and saw much of the world; she especially enjoyed her trips to Ireland. She was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll, the American Legion, SARH Auxiliary and the Ladies Guild..
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Bill, Ed and Raymond. Survivors include her husband Joe; one son Jim and his wife Peggy; two daughters: Ann and her husband John; and Colleen and her husband Lyle; four grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law Patricia.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, December 1, 2008, at the St. Ann Catholic Church in Vail, Iowa. Fr. John Thomas served as Celebrant of the Mass with interment at St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery. Con-celebrants were Fr. Lloyd White, Fr. Timothy Schott and Fr. Siby. Organist Irene Feilmeier provided accompaniment for St. Ann's Family Choir. Matt Lujano served as lector. Serving as pallbearers were Robert Healy, Mike Malloy, John Healy, Richard Healy, Pat Malloy and Don Healy. Military Honors were by American Legion Posts 65 and 196 of Vail and Westside. Sunday Prayer Services included a Legion of Mary Rosary at 4 P.M. and a Vigil Service at 7 P.M., at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. The family invited everyone to the Vail Community Center for fellowship and lunch served by the Altar Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.
