I'm watching one of my favorite cowboy movies on TV right now. It was a favorite when I saw it at theater around 1963. The movie was called How the West Was Won. Debbie Reynolds sang a song called Home in the Meadow. I liked the song so much that in the late 70s I bought the album soundtrack to that movie. In the late '80s or early '90s when Henry had an early afternoon show and Debbie Reynolds was a guest. I called into the show and somehow got through and spoke to Debbie Reynolds and asked her if she would sing Home in the Meadow for me. Henry reminded me that she hadn't warmed up her voice but being the pro that she is she did a beautiful rendition of the song. anyways. Thank you Henry and thank you Debbie for a memory that will always be important to me.

Oh, I did not know that Henry passed away. I used to listen to him back in the 80s. He was so entertaining to me. I can hear him now. I know that he passed away a number of years back, but, I just had to remember him on here. Love and kisses to his family now. Love, a former listener, Ellen Twaddle, now living in West Noonan, North Dakota (Formerly Chafton, NC).

Henry almost hired me in Greensboro when he was program director there. But we would meet again some years later when as host of my talkshow on WBIG,we discovered the "ghost" of former BIG station manager "Edney Ridge" WBIG and WBT were both owned by Jeff-Pilot so Henry invited me to cohost his show that night. The phones lit up as we talked about ghosts and unexplained things listeners would talk about on the air.Thats the 2nd and last time I saw Henry before he retired. A great guy with a grin to always share. We miss you Henry!

For Henry...
WEEP NOT FOR ME
Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.
Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.
I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.
Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.
Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.
Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Henry was a pal to many of us. Actually, we discovered we were distant cousins and then took to referring to each other as "cousin". It was a joy to know him and to work with him. I'm so glad we got him into the NCAB Hall of Fame prior to his passing.

Henry was my pal off the air as well as on. He loved the mountains and once or twice a year we would drive up to West Jefferson, Boone, & Blowing Rock and hit all the special places. Mostly a good place to eat. Henry helped teach me to love the Carolinas.

My 80-year-old grandmother moved in with my parents (and their wicked 20-year-old daughter...that would be me) in 1980. I gave her a radio, and she discovered Henry and turned me onto him as well. One night I heard him say they were having a Mother's Day contest and he would draw five postcards submitted by midnight that night and call the mothers on Mother's Day. It was about 11:00 pm when I rushed to the Post Office. Yes, he called my grandmother. She had an ear-to-ear grin when she realized who she was talking to, and that night I recorded the broadcast. I miss Henry. He was what laid-back, friendly talk radio was all about.
When I get the tape transferred to a more permanent medium I will be able to hear her say, "Well, HELLOOOOO HENRY..." again and again.
I miss him, too.

Truly a gentle man and our hero - you are still and will always be missed - always remembered for the goodness you brought others. (my mother Miss Virginia wouldn't wash her face for a week after you kissed her cheek!). She lived only a few blocks from you and was your "secret admirer" for many years. Where you are, I hope they have BIG bags of popcorn as good as you gave out, and "ho-Bogan-wiches" galore! and say Hello to Miss Virginia for me... Love You..kb

I first heard of "Hello Henry" from staying with my grandmother (bedridden with Rhematoid Arthritis) when I was young. The highlight of our evenings (M-F) was to listen to 1110 am, from 8-12. We enjoyed listening to "Hello Henry", when we could pick the station up. We learned so much by listening to the program. I am saddened to hear of his passing. He will be greatly missed. Thank you, Henry for coming into our home and brightening up our evenings with that laugh that you had. Our loss is definitely heaven's gain.

Such a dear and talented man. You are loved, remembered and missed. My mother thought the sun rose & set on your face-you kissed her hand once and she threatened to never wash it. What a tragic loss...there will never be another Henry. I remember Henry sitting on my bed when I was a little girl reading bedtime stories to me. He was good friends with my mom and stepfather, Jack and Dot Smith, of Rockingham. It was a real treat to know Henry was coming to visit because he always had wonderful stories for the whole family. He came to visit my stepfather while he was in the hospital in Charlotte a couple of years before he died. We hadn't seen Henry in years, but it seemed like just yesterday when he walked into the room. He was such an inspiration to everyone. My condolences go out to his family and friends in Charlotte. I know you will truly miss him.

Having grown up in Charlotte, I had the privilege of listening to Henry when I was little. The world got smaller when I was in college and my mother away from home, Miss Jimi, shared with me her friendship with this wonderful man. I am so happy for them that they were able to create a life together. Miss Jimi, you have been in my thoughts constantly. You know how special you are to me! To Henry's family and friends: I am so sorry for your loss. The entire Charlotte community will truly miss him.

Jimi & Family,
You don't remember me, but I met you in the Blacklion it seems only just a few years ago after you and Henry got married. I was so happy for you both especially for Henry. He was just beyond himself with joy showing off his new wife--I met Henry not long after he moved to Charlotte and loved his "Hello Henry" show---
I was so sadden to hear about Henry---He was such an inspiration to everyone he met and he never met a stranger--He was a special angel that touched so many hearts and we will all miss him greatly--
My mother passed away a year ago and for years she would listen to Henry's radio shows which brought her lots of joy--She was fortunate to meet him several times which thrilled her.
My sympathy goes out to you and your family--God Bless--

I was sadened to read in the Charlotte.com on April 22, about the loss of Mr. Henry Boggan. I too was a listener of "Hello Henry" on 110 WBT in the late 70's and early 80's.
He didn't talk about anything special, like the talk
radio personalities of today.
His style of radio, was as if you were his friend. Heaven has gained a "Southern Gentleman".
May God be with his family at this time.

I worked with Henry in the mid 80's. He was a sweet soul. I will never forget some of the "old sayings" he would repeat. For example: "If you need money, stand outside under a full moon with an opened wallet and say, Moon, moon, beautiful moon, fill her up, fill her up, fill her up." I'm not sure it works. But it was a fun thought. Thanks for the memories my dear friend. I'm smiling as I imagine all the people in heaven who must be saying, "Hello Henry."

My dearest Henry, your genuine love for mankind, gentle spirit, kindness, infectious laugh with such gusto that could only emanate from deep within a man of great substance, will truly be missed. To your family, I say without reservation, that it was indeed an honor and a pleasure to work with Henry for 13 years at JPCC. Twenty years ago as I walked into the hallowed halls of the great JPCC shaking in my boots, Henry made me feel right at home! Yes, he's THE MAN! He never waivered, he stayed the course, his ideals, integrity, beliefs and skills are worthy of aspiring young broadcasters to follow. Henry's pet name for me was "Jewels". Well, now he's THE JEWEL in God's country -Oh, Henry, how you'll sparkle on the streets of gold as you meet once again those great BT broadcasters who have gone on before you! Love you forever, Henry! See you on the other side!

I was a regular caller to "Hello Henry" in the 1980's. I also enjoyed Henry's Big Band music program on Sunday nights. We at Mix 106 were grateful that he was willing to get up early on Saturday mornings to help Ted Caudle with "The Southern Lawn and Garden Line". Today (4-22-06)we played a soundbite that featured Ted and Henry previewing the show for 4-22-01. We also used a soundbite from 3-10-01. I was working across the hall for our AM sister WHVN when Henry was on the show. Now I'm the producer/ engineer. I'll miss talking to him about North Carolina Tarheels football! Henry and I had some mutual friends from Rockingham: Calvin and Jean Burgess and John Snowden.
My deepest sympathy goes out to the Boggan family. Mix 106 was richly blessed to have him on our airwaves!

I undoubtedly owe Henry my life. As a young mother of two babies in the early 80's I would leave work in Charlotte after 11 every night to drive back to Concord. Sometimes I was almost to tired to walk to the car. Henry kept me company on those long rides home...usually laughing, sometimes crying...but Henry never let me fall asleep. Thank you Henry...the world is a better place because you were in it.

I had the chance to see Henry again a few weeks ago at the Broadcasting Hall of Fame ceremony in Chapel Hill. I also worked with Henry during my 14 years at WBT, some as his news anchor and other times during Sunday Brunch. Henry always tried to pin me down on the facts, because he knew his listeners wanted them. I also knew that there was a gentility in the way he treated all of us that worked with him and the listeners he so cherished as part of his extended family.
It was good to see Henry last month as I sat there with H.A. Thompson, Mike Collins, Rockin Ray, John Hancock and other close friends from WBT. We are all a family... and we will miss one of our own. There are days in my work when people talk tough and get angry... and I remember what Henry told me often... and what he told another guest book entrant... "be nice." Thanks Henry, for sharing part of yourself with all of us.

Oh sweet man ... our friend, our uncle ... you didn't say goodbye.
We'll never say goodbye. I wonder right now, will we ever laugh again? I mean, really laugh, like we used to when you were telling the same old tired jokes, that always brought tears of laughter down our faces, over and over again ... the road trips ... the stories ... and yes, the ghost stories (you had a lot of those), and we loved them all ... and you loved telling them ... the milkshakes ... the Christmas dinners ... the bubbling Christmas tree lights ... and remember "no balloons, they're tacky" ... the fun ... the wonderful way you could fill up a room, with your warm, wonderful voice ... your great big laugh, and all the warmth and love anyone could ever hope for ... the stories of Granny and "Duke" and all the old days ... and yes, the next time we get together, we WILL just sit and talk and visit and eat ... the next time ... just like you said ... and until then, Dear "Hen" ... "sleep warm, sleep well" ... we will miss you every day ... we love you, Henry Boggan.
Now rest sweet uncle ... run and sing and laugh ... watch over us all.

A gentleman in every way, Henry Boggan reflected everything good about North Carolina. He inspired many to achieve the the greater good in themselves. He was a warm friend over the radio and companion to all of his listeners.
I had a neightbor, in Florida, who was a retired Army officer who used to listen to Henry every night.
When he would drive back up north, once a year, He would go out of his way to go by and see Henry. Each visit they would take a picture together and my neightbor would display the pictures in his billiard room. Last count he had eight starting in 1981.
He was just a regular listener, but Henry took the time, every time, to visit at least for a few minutes. It's what made him special.
Today, our loss is heavens gain.
I can hear him saying to the angels "Hi Neighbor!"

I spent 23 years doing local radio at WSTP in Salisbury, and I can proudly say that Henry was one of my strongest influences. Though I never met him personally, I heard his first show on WBT in 1979 and many shows that followed. His true gift was listening. And unlike many of today's hosts, Henry displayed a warmth that was as comfortable as an old shoe. I miss that warmth on the radio, and I will certainly miss Henry.

My first conversation with Henry was when he did the "Red Tag Sale" on Saturday's mornings. Listening to him over the years on Hello Henry really brightened my days. I had the opportunity to meet Henry several times and he was truly a genuine person. On my 50th birthday, my husband and I were eating in a local restaurant and sitting at the next table were three of my very favorite personalities Henry, Tom Desio and Mike Collins. They found out it was my birthday and insisted on giving me a birthday dessert of my choice. What nice guys - all of them. We'll all miss Henry very much.

Goodbye Henry - you'll be missed. Henry was the last of the true "talk show" hosts who understood his role was to be a moderator. While he expressed his opinion, he never made you feel as if your opinion wasn't important, necessary and valued. Listening to talk shows today only make you realize how great he truly was.
Rest in peace good friend.

Similar to Tommy Tomlinson's experience, I too used to listen to AM radio at night growing up in Wilmington, NC. I had an old Magnavox tube type radio my grandmother had given me from her beach house. Henry Boggan was one of my favorites in the night time lineup, along with EG Marshall's CBS Radio Mystery theater, and Cubs Games on WLS Chicago.
Henry's voice, especially over the old tube-type, was smooth and easygoing, and easy to fall asleep to. I moved to Charlotte in 1988, and listened to Henry quite a bit here as well. He had a big heart, patience to listen to his guest callers, a deep love of people, America, and the South. He wanted his callers and listeners to be the star, and I think he mostly wanted people to recognize the goodness in each other, no matter where they came from, what color they were, where they worshipped, or how they liked their tomato sandwich.
We'll miss you Henry, and won't forget.

You are some of the best memories of growing up in Charlotte. So many times I remember My father asking if I had listened to Henry yesterday. Why he asked I do not know, He always new the answer. What I loved most about him asking was the conversations with my father that would always follow. I feel that is one of the reasons we are so close today. It was Henry. I lived everyday thankful for people like Henry. I have missed you on the air but will miss you more knowing I will not bump into you on the street. I will miss you Henry! Thanks for the years.

I was a regular listener and caller to Hello Henry when I worked nights as a manager for Hardee's. I won a large bag of Piedmont Popcorn on his program for knowing about Smith Brothers Cough Drops. He also did a music show on Sunday nights which featured Big Band music. We were fortunate to have Henry as the original host for the Southern Lawn and Garden Line on Mix 106. He and Ted Caudle had done programs at WBT. Our GM Tom Gentry felt the chemistry that they had would create a popular program. It did! We were grateful for the time and support Henry devoted to Mix 106. Sadly, radio will never have another "Hello Henry"!!
I'll miss talking with him about North Carolina Tar Heels football.

I came to this country and to Charlotte in 1979 ans shortly after my American husband made me listen and discover Henry Bogan. Even when I had a hard time to understand every words of the listeners I learned so much about this marvelous country, thanks to Henry. Later I was doing tax returns for a wellknown tax company and Henry came to our office. I jumped to the receptionist desk to get him as a customer. It was one of the most exciting and memorable 0ne and a half hour of my life: funny, sweet, very refined, great great man. I will miss him

What a dear man. Many years ago I had the privilege of being in the studio with Henry one evening. We were on-the-air, talking about festivals and special events in South Carolina. He was so kind and gentle, and made me feel totally at ease.

Having managed Charlotte radio stations for 33-years I remember when "Hello Henry" arrived at WBT. Through the years we became friends. Henry was the epitome of a kind gentlemen. He'll be missed.

After moving to NC from NJ at a young age leaving Grandma behind, it was Henry who kept a link between the two of us. We would both listen to his radio show and talk about it in an occasional phone call. She was endlessly amazed his voice could carry so far, and could not help but imitate the "hell-o-o-o" and southern accent. Grandma passed away long go, but Henry gave me priceless, special memories I carry always. Thanks Henry, say Hell-o-o-o to my Grandma for me!

Henry always made me smile when I ran into him in the halls of WBT. My favorite conversation of all time had to be when we compared and contrasted the virtues of the two talking pig movies making the rounds of Charlotte's cineplexes. I still laugh thinking about that. Henry was what I remember radio being all about...connecting to the listeners to each other...not disconnecting them from each other.

In the 80's, I hosted a Sunday morning program, "Visions" on the FM (WBCY & Sunny FM) just down the hall from WBT. After my shift ended, I would head over to the WBT studios to sit with Henry & Mike Collins. What a chemistry these guys had on air. Henry made you laugh and feel as though he was your best friend. Henry just made you feel special. He was a Charlotte radio icon and he'll be missed greatly.

Though I only knew Henry a short time, his impact on my life was profound. I'll never forget joking about Milk-Dud (Moonpie) and the dreaded Blu-ette. Be at peace Pal. God Bless you Jimi.

I don't believe there ever has been, nor will there ever be, a person who has an impact on the Charlotte area like Henry. I grew up listening to Henry at night with my mom. I'm sure Mom and Dad were thrilled to give Henry a big "hellooooo" yesterday. Thanks for the good memories you helped create, Henry!

Tom Desio was my best friend. I met Henry through Tom. He was a good friend and a, truly, good person. Henry and Tom will have them "rolling in the streets of gold."

I never met Henry, but he helped me through some very dark evenings. I'll never forget when Hurrican Hugo came through Charlotte and all I had for entertainment on those many nights that the electric was off, was a small AM radio. It was Henry's voice that offered comfort and advice. Henry's voice that made you want to get up and keep going. Thanks Henry, you will be missed.

Henry Boggan meant an awful lot to me. I moved to Charlotte in 1982, and quickly found WBT on the dial. I loved listening to Henry at night, talking about anything and everything, but with never an unkind word for anyone. His audience was black, white, Yankee, Southern (and Floridians, too). It was the great melting pot of the East Coast, and Henry lead the band with kindness and humor. His type of radio is long gone, and I have long missed it.

I came to Charlotte in 1981 but knew a lot about our city from listening to Henry on WBT every night from Florida. After I got here I called Henry even though I worked for the competition WSOC-AM 93 on the air in the afternoon. Henry couldn't have been nicer and he even went as far as plugging my show on WSOC. The man was fearless and the best friend the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce ever had.
Later I came to work at WBT first doing overnights and later weekends and vacation fill. Following Henry at night on WBT was a joy. The atmosphere in the studio each night was a party always a lot of fun.
I remember taking a trip to NYC and while at the top of the Empire State Building I tuned my Walkman to 1110 WBT and there was Henry on the air at home. He touched so many with a sense of class and fun.

I never remember Henry being "political", which seems to be the only thing talk radio knows anymore. Henry was great, and he made all he talked to feel welcomed into the studio, even over the phone. I'm afraid there may never be anyone else like him on radio again. I always recognize 2 voices on the radio or television: Casey Kasem, and Henry Boggan. Godspeed Henry.

This man made a tremendous impact on me as a child. He and Tom Dezio were truly a joy, in a time when radio talk was in fact "talk," not mindless banter and screaming. Henry, my friend, you will be missed.
