Henry Waffenschmidt Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 24, 2025.
Henry Waffenschmidt, 83, of Germantown, WI, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2025.

Born on December 12, 1941, in Szekszárd, Hungary, to Henry and Elizabeth Waffenschmidt, Henry-affectionately known as "the most interesting man in the world" to those lucky enough to sit with him and listen to his countless stories-was a man of deep wisdom and character.

Henry proudly served his country as part of the U.S. Army's 4th Armored Division, Signal Corps. After his service, he pursued entrepreneurship, running several businesses with his wife over the years. His greatest joy, however, was his family and life on their hobby farm in Richfield. Whether helping Elisabeth and Desiree with the never-ending farm chores or riding his lawn tractor-often with a small dog perched happily on his lap-Henry's presence was steady, loving, and dependable. Known for his tough, no-nonsense exterior, he was also a kind and gentle spirit, especially with the many animals he was blessed to have; he loved his Rottweilers, and they loved him in return.

He loved history, especially the events of the World Wars, and spent many hours reading and researching. A true patriot, he held a profound respect for the United States and its armed forces. He enjoyed collecting World War II memorabilia and delighted in sharing both his collection and the stories behind each piece.

Henry is survived by his beloved wife, Elisabeth; his children, Dirk Waffenschmidt of Germany and Desiree (Jim) Scherdin of Wisconsin; and his cherished granddaughters, Olivia and Samantha. He adored his granddaughters and was quick to do anything for them. When they were little, weekends at the farm with Opa were filled with love and lasting memories. Though miles apart, Henry and Dirk shared a close bond-speaking multiple times each day and remaining deeply connected throughout Henry's life. He is also survived by his brother, Daniel (Cheryl) Waffenschmidt; nephews DJ and David; and niece Amanda. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Elizabeth.

A memorial service will be held at Grace Lutheran Church in Menomonee Falls on October 13, 2025. Visitation will begin at 3:30 p.m., with the service to follow at 5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, W196N9525 Cross View Way, Menomonee Falls, WI 53051.

Friends and family are invited to share memories, condolences, and photos on Henry's guestbook.

One of my fondest memories of Henry is Christmas 2013. It was a joyful time filled with laughter and warmth. Surrounded by Elisabeth, Desiree with Jim, and his beloved grandchildren Olivia and Sam, Henry´s happiness was unmistakable.

Another moment I will always remember is the helicopter flight over Milwaukee. Seeing the city from above with my American family was truly special and unforgettable.

I will remember Henry for his kindness, optimism, and the gentle way he brought people together. We would sometimes exchange a few words in German, which always brought a smile.

Henry, es war mir eine Ehre!
Danke für die schönen Zeit - ich werde dich für immer als mein amerikanischer Opa in Erinnerung behalten. Eines Tages werden wir uns wiedersehen

Henry was a great man. He had been through a lot during his service for his country and was very open about sharing his experience. He was always very welcoming when we would come over to help clean up the yard for them. My prayers are with Elisabeth and we will meet him again with Jesus.
