HERB TILSON Obituary

HERB TILSON 1932 - 2017 Passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on January 3, 2017, in Milton, Ontario. Much devoted husband for 59 years to Mary Kathleen. Beloved father to his two sons Bob (Tish) and Doug (Mary Beth). Proud grandfather of Tiffany, Jenna, Austin and Ben. Herb was a graduate of Bloor Collegiate and School of Physical and Health Care Education - University of Toronto. Herb was an outstanding runner - 2nd in the 1948 Junior Olympics 1 Mile Run, 4-time Canadian University Champion in the 3 Mile Run and Cross-country Runs. Herb was Captain of the Hall of Fame U of T Championship Track Team. He also played on the Intermediate U of T Hockey and Boxing teams. Herb had a very devoted teaching career at George Harvey Vocational School and Thistletown Collegiate. He coached 83 high school teams and was awarded with the Pete Beach Award by the Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic Association as one who best typifies the true function of a teacher - coach - a source of discipline, a mentor and a friend. Herb's greatest joy involved being part of the expansion of high school sports by introducing wrestling, cross country, hockey, golf and baseball into the High School Sports Programme. Herb wishes to thank the many friends, teammates and students for his great memories and his sons and grandchildren for continuing the family success in OFSAA events and many activities. At Herb's request, there will be no funeral service. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements entrusted to McKersie-Kocher Funeral Home, 114 Main Street East, Milton, 905-878-4452. My wife Cathy and I were saddened to learn of the untimely passing of our long time neighbour Herb... we were neighbours in Palomino Ranch for nearly 16 years and fondly remember the regular driveway conversations while we walked Kendall and Jackson. Herb will be missed.

I met Herb in the summer of 1958 when he was our coach in the Etobicoke Track Club. Though only a kid, I was impressed then with his helpfulness, encouragement and empathy. I next encountered him at the TCI reunion in 2007 and was surprised to learn that he began teaching there shortly after I graduated. It was as if we had met just recently as fifty years fell away. That was a measure for me of his openness and friendliness. He was a lovely man. My deepest sympathies to his family.

Herb was always 'Mr. Tilson' to us as students at Thistletown (sometimes, between ourselves, we'd refer to him affectionately as 'Herbie'). He was remarkable in many ways. I was always impressed by his quiet and gentle guidance and encouragement. I'm so glad I was taught by him and knew him. May he rest in peace, and may his family take comfort in recalling what a fine man he was.

Mr Tilson was a lifelong colleague of my dad at TCI. Herb will always be known for his coaching and mentoring of his students, being competitive but fair and truly having their personal development at heart. As a colleague I know my dad enjoyed his dry sense of humour and wit. Deep felt condolences to the family.

Herb Tilson was my high school wrestling coach (1974-79). Herb was a great man and played a very important role in my young adult life. He taught me many life lessons particularly the importance of work ethic. Herb also taught me how to win. Rest in peace Herb Tillson
