I ran into hockey player Bob Madson at Alaskan Wedding. Bob played for state champion Grand Rapids, later becoming top-goal scorer for the University of Alaska. Bob's brother Don Madson was recruited by Herb Brooks & played while I attended University of MN; my favorite memories are watching this team. Story @ SteveEng.com

Herb Brooks was and always will be a role model for me and countless others. It was a long road but the destination was worth it. No effort was too great and no task was too hard.
The part of the movie after they beat the Russians and he heads off into the tunnel to fully appreciate the moment by himself says it all about the man.
Thank you.

What a wonderful coach! Saw the movie "Miracle." He had a very clear and decisive approach to getting his point across and I think it really made an impression on his hockey players. They learned lifelong lessons from him. How proud he must have been. Many blessings to his family.

R.I.P. from four brothers from your hometown of St. Paul, Minnesota. We played at South St. Paul HS in the late 80's and will never forget the impact you had on us as kids growing up in America's Hockey capitol as well as the rest of the Twin Cities, all of Minnesota, an entire nation and a sport. R.I.P. The state of Minnesota still misses you and the impact you had on a place with such a rich heritage in hockey.

I was 20-years-old, the youngest staffer on the traveling Reagan for President Campaign, and we were in a high school gym somewhere in New Hampshire, Gov. Reagan had just started a speech to maybe 5,000, when a Secret Service Agent went pssst, hey kid. come here. I did, and he told me to go out to the war wagon to hear something. I got there, and the agents guarding the limo and war wagon were listening to the final minutes of the Miracle on the radio. At the end, I was so pumped I ran back in to my boss, David Fischer, and told him, excitedly saying I wish we could tell the Gov. He told me to figure out a way to, and just do it.
So on the back of my biz card I wrote: OLYMPIC HOCKEY FINAL JUST IN. SOVIET UNION 3, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 4!!
I walked right down the aisle in the middle of the crowd, right up to the dais, and went to one knee, waiting for an applause interruption. Mrs. Reagan looked at me like I had lost my marbles. When I could, I stood up and handed my card to the man sitting between the podium and Mrs. R, and asked him to please give it to the Gov. I then beat it over to the sidelines.
When the Gov. read it as the applause died down, he got the biggest, goofiest grin on his face, and he said, "I wish I had this news earlier when I was talking about these people." He then read it exactly as written, and finished it of in a deep, emotional roar of United States of America- FOUR!!!!
The crowd went completely bananas, crying, screaming, hugging, complete pandemonium. Biggest spontaneous cheer of the entire campaign. Sure made the Gov. happy... Thanks, Herb. And all of you players.

It was four years ago today the Herb Brooks left us, leaving behind a hockey legacy that will never be forgotten. Herb was my mentor and inspiration to be a hockey coach. And I will continue to honor him by being the best coach I can be teaching kids the game of hockey the way he wanted to be taught. Only six days earlier would have been your 70th birthday and I hope you will continue to guide and inspire me Herb…
January 13, 2007
I've heard it called one of the greatest miracles of the twentieth century... as far as I'm concerned, it was the greatest. I won't deny I'm not old enough to remember that game - I was two at the time - but I do remember the happiness it brought to my family, huge hockey fans.
I was born two years to the day before they beat the Soviets. I still look at the game as my second birthday present. A day late, yes, but more than worth the extra day.
Mister Brooks, that day you brought the dream back to the United States. You brought us something that we so rarely now have the chance to do - to go beyond our imaginations, to share the dream with the nation around us and its people.
My only wish is that I had been given the opportunity to meet you before your passage, sir. I will never forget the ending dedication in 'Miracle' - it was to you, and they were right... It didn't mean a thing that you didn't see the movie - to you, it wasn't a movie. It was life.
Rest in peace, Coach Brooks, and God bless dreamers like you.

I just watched "Miracle On Ice" for the umpteenth time and each time I watch it, I still get a lump in my throat. The game was awesome when I witnessed it actually happening for the first time in 1980, and re-living it with the movie version makes it that much sweeter. I was born in Minnesota and spent my early years there before moving to Colorado, and it sure is nice to know that they still make heroes. I'm prouder still to have hailed from the great state of Minnesota, which also produced the extraordinary Mr. Herb Brooks! Even though he is gone from us now, I'd still like to say thank you Mr. Brooks, for giving us all a dream, and with this movie version, we can hold on to this dream forever!

Just watched "Miracle" I remember in 1980 I was a freshmen in high school and how much that game inpired me to make the high school hockey team, which I did. Then 16 years later,,I myself, became a high school hockey coach in Colorado and the 1st meeting I had with the kids was to watch the USA and Russia hockey game. Even today, when I watch the game it still gives me goose bumbs , (every time) Thanks Herb

Like so many others, I didn't (and still don't) know "a blue line from a clothesline" when I watched the Miracle on Ice game in 1980 in my mid-30's. When the movie came out, it was a thrill to be able to experience it all over again. I want to thank the Brooks family for sharing him and their own lives with us. I fulfilled my own dream this summer when, at age 60, I completed the Tevis Cup ride (a 100-miles in one day endurance ride over the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California). I wasn't sure whether I would have the strength to do it as the completion rate is usually less than 50%, but in the months prior to the ride I watched "Miracle" over and over again and I, also, began to believe. And on July 23 my moment also came. Thank you, Herb, for teaching not only your hockey players, but also the rest of us, to follow our dreams.

I was just in Lake Placid last weekend for the kickoff of the 25th Anniversary celebration. Jimmy Craig was there to relight the Olympic flame. I want to thank the Lake Placid community and Herb Brooks especially for making it so special for me.

My family and I saw The Movie "Miracle" in the Palace Theater in Lake Pacid last February. (We live just a short drive south of Lake Placid.) Unbelievable! Fantastic! I felt as if I were back all those years ago watching the game against the Soviets, got all choked-up, felt like a fool until I looked around the movie theater and saw the faces of the others around me. You could tell that the movie brought back such wonderful memories in a time we needed a boost as a country, this team gave it to us, as well as the other US olympians. It's just too bad that we have to have Pros playing in the Olympics, when there should ONLY be Amateurs showcasing their talents. Herb Brooks was a phenominal coach! What he did is unmatched to this day. With the 25th Anniversary of the games upon us, Herb will be missed, but thought of often during these celebrations.

We all live our lives wondering just what our purpose in life is and very few of us ever get a chance to make a lasting difference. Herb Brooks, maybe without knowing what his purpose was, defined a nation's emotions by simply doing what he did best, coaching a hockey team. I doubt he had any preconcieved notions about the implications his life's work would have. He simply did his job and it changed forever the emotional makeup of this nation. By the simply act of coaching a hockey team he managed to polarize the pride of every single person who is proud of this great country. We should all be so fortunate to have our lives impact so many in such a positive way. May God keep you on his first line.

The true testament of Herb Brooks was giving the credit of the accomplishment to the players. I have coached youth sports for many years and have found this to be a rare quality only found in the best coaches and people. His contribution to sports in America is that his name by itself inspires people to do their very best.

I WITNESSED THOSE FABULOUS GAMES, AND WILL NEVER NEVER FORGET THE OVERWHELMING EMOTION AND PRIDE FOR THOSE YOUNG MEN, THEIR COACH, AND OUR COUNTRY.
I WILL ALWAYS BE GRATEFUL FOR THE COURAGE AND TENACITY DISPLAYED BY THAT TEAM, BECAUSE THEY ARE A CONTINUING INSPIRATION TO AMERICAN'S TODAY, AND TO OUR YOUNG PEOPLE WHO DESPERATELY NEED HEROS WHO REVEAL INTEGRITY AND STRENGTH IN THE FACE OF TRULY DAUNTING TASKS.
THESE PEOPLE MERIT OUR RESPECT AND OUR GRATITUDE, AND MR. HERB BROOKS MERITS OUR PRAISE AS A MAN WHO MATCHED HIS VISION WITH THE ABILITY, COMMITTMENT AND WILLINGNESS TO SEE IT THROUGH.
HE IS A MARVELOUS EXAMPLE OF THE INDIVIDUAL WHO UNDERSTANDS THE DEFINITION OF "PRESS ON!"
THANK YOU FOR PUTTING THIS WEB SITE TOGETHER. HE IS A PRECIOUS EXAMPLE FOR EACH ONE OF US.

I was not alive when the "Miracle on Ice" happened, but having a mother from Minnesota and a father from Wisconsin, I learned about it as I grew up, from trips back to Minnesota, and just having my parents talk about it. My parents always talked about Herb, the amazing coach from Minnesota, whenever the subject came up on the "Miracle on Ice". When I found out he died, it just hit me like a pile of bricks. I had just gotten home, and on TV is this stuff on how the "Minnesota Miracle Man" had died. I was very upset, because I had grown up learning about this event. When "Miracle" came out, though, I thought the ending to the movie was very touching, when they dedicated it to him. I never met Herb, but he has played a role in how I live my life every day. Thank you Herb, and rest in peace.

Herb Brook's was the type of Coach that I always respected. He knew how to coach and he researched the game inside and out. I watched the game during the 1980 Olympics and I was so proud of what he and his team accomplished in such a short time, truly a testiment to his coaching ability. That particular year I was coaching a High School team in Chicago and I used the USA team as a morale booster for my kids to show them what hard work on the ice could accomplish. I follow the Golden Gophers to this day and remember what he brought to that program up there. Thank you Herb for the greatest of all Hockey memories.

I was 28 years old when I watched this event and even today at age 52 I can't think of any experience that made me feel so patriotic and proud to be a part of America. It was one of the most exciting things in my lifetime. America was more simple and innocent in 1980 and I think all Americans felt a part of this great occasion. I fell in love with all that were a part of this great team. I have never forgotten how I felt ... that wonderful feeling. Thank you so much!

I am but 18 years old, While not old enough to have watched the 1980 Olympic Games, The movie 'Miracle' has offered great respect and gratatude towards Herb and the rest of the team. While i have not played hockey i have love for the game. Watching this movie has given me the courage and determination to do anything in life. While i do not know any of his family or the players of the Olympic Gold winning team, i would like to send my admiration to the them all. Thank you for making my goals easier to reach.

I've never been a Hockey fan in my life, but I have never lost my interest on it. My love in sports it's to Baseball, but this doesn't mean that I don't know about other sports, because that's why I live for. Some of you who are reading this, maybe are asking yourself's why I'm writting here because I know nothing about Hockey. And I understand your feelings. I'm writting because I've been a sports fan since the day I was born. And after doing some researches about the all the greatest moments sports had ever had, and I saw the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. When I saw team USA winning the USSR in their own game with a team full of college kids against the best the USSR has ever had. Then I asked myself; WOW!! this is amazing!! As we all know teams are made not only because of the players, but it is more about their managers. When I first looked at the name Herb Brooks, I asked myself who is this person?, what had he achieved to have all this credit?. As we sports fan know in Puerto Rico, Basketball and Baseball are the only sports that we are one of the best in the world, so which means its rare to us to hear the name Herb Brooks. Then afterward I saw the movie Miracle, it was amazing how the director used the same footage and recreated in a different angle. And most of all Herb Brooks attitude and love to his game and family. That was unbelievable, this has been the first movie I had ever seen that recreates a series of real life incidents of something that happened in the real world. Well I just would like to say to Herb's family and friends that here in Puerto Rico his name have been heard and most of all praised as one of the greates coaches in sports history. And by myself and my family thanks for the memories and the strategies you gave for sports in about that everything is about the name in front of the jersey, not on the back of it. Because when you play the Olympics its all about playing for your country not for your name. And thats the way it should be. Thanks for everything Herbie and hope to see you soon on heaven and in our souls.
