Herbert J. Buehler

BUEHLER Herbert J. Buehler, 80, educator, state senator Herbert J. Buehler, 80, a former state senator and retired educator, passed away Sunday, June 24, 2007, at the Medical Center of Ocean in Brick, surrounded by his family. There will be a gathering of family and friends on Tuesday, July 3, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home, State Highway 138, Wall Township. Mr. Buehler was born in Bayonne and moved to Ocean Township in 1952. He graduated from Bayonne High School, where he and his teammates won the National High School Boys Cross Country Championship in 1944. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1945 to 1946. Afterwards, Mr. Buehler graduated from Seton Hall University with a B.S. in political science in 1952 and earned an M.Ed. from Rutgers University in 1958. He taught in the Ocean Township school system for 27 years and was chairman of the Social Studies Department from 1965 until his retirement in 1979. Mr. Buehler was the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship, 1963 to 1964, and as part of the Exchange Teachers Program, taught history at the Grange Secondary School in Aylesbury, Bucks, England. He was also an assistant professor at Brookdale Community College for several years. Mr. Buehler served on the Ocean Township Council from 1967 to 1971 and was a past president of the Monmouth County League of Municipalities. He was elected to the New Jersey State Senate and represented the 10th Coastal District from 1974 to 1978. Since his retirement, Mr. Buehler traveled extensively throughout Europe and Asia. He was predeceased by his parents, Clarence and Veronica, and his sister, Florence Boboltz. Surviving are his children, Warren of Shark River Hills, Wendy Jennings and her husband, Bruce, of Little Silver, Laurie Heber and her husband, Larry, of Howell, David of Ocean, and John and his wife, Gena, of Wall; his grandchildren, Brad, Alex, Abigail, Noah and Emma, and his brother, Warren and his wife, Eileen, of Santa Barbara, Calif. He is also survived by his cousins, John Crotty and Charles Bull, and several nieces and nephews. At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, donations to Habitat for Humanity and the Monmouth County Foodbank would be appreciated.
