Herbert Delong

Herbert Delong, 80, of Ironton, Herbie as he was affectionately called by friends was taken by angels wings to meet his Savior as he was surrounded by his family and friends, Tuesday (September 22, 2009) at the Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Kentucky. The Kitts Hill, Ohio native was born December 23, 1928, the son of the late Elisha and Ora Stacey Delong. He is survived by his wife, Marcella W. Dickess Delong, whom he married October 18, 1954. Herbie was a 1950 graduate of Kitts Hill High School. He was a U.S. Army Veteran where he served in the 18th Infantry stationed in Germany. He was a former employee at Allied Chemical Nitrogen Division in South Point for 15 years and retired from Hecla Water after 23 years of service. He was a member of the Highway Baptist Church in Aid and attended Sharon Baptist Church in Ironton for the past several years. He loved sports, gardening and cooking. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: infant child 3 brothers: Johnny Delong, Roscoe Delong, and Isaac Delong 1 sister: Norma Delawder In addition to his wife, he is also survived by: son and daughter-in-law: Timothy A. and Gina Delong of Kitts Hill son: Christopher H. Delong of Ironton daughter: Susan M. Ovadia of Gallipolis 6 grandchildren: Stephanie F. Delong, Melissa D. Clutters, Staci A. Kirkpatrick, Ryan Tyler Kirkpatrick, Chelsea N. Delong, and Christopher Cody Delong 3 great grandchildren: Brigham L. Clutters, Sidnee Clutters, Marleigh M. Burks a brother and sister-in-law: James and Patricia Delong of Kitts Hill special brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Bill and Ruth Stephenson of Ironton, Nancy Johnson of Ironton, Harley and Laura Dickess of Dry Prong, Louisiana, Rhoda Dickess of Kitts Hill, Eleanor Dickess of South Point, Stepherene Stokes of Springfield, Jessie Delong of Kitts Hill, and Mae Delong of Kitts Hill Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Saturday (September 26, 2009) at Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 South Seventh Street, Ironton, Ohio with Rev. Steve Harvey officiating. Burial will follow in Sugar Creek Cemetery. Friends may call Saturday from 11:00 AM until the time of the service.
