To Herb's familly,
I just heard of his passing this evening as we stopped at the McDonald's at 67th & Lyndale when we saw the Main Street Bus go into the parking lot. We spoke with the 2 ladies who went in for ice cream cones for the bus riders and told them we were Howard Hackel's daughter and son-in-law. Howard was one of the original Main Street residents as was Herb. We got to know Herb rather well during the 3.5 years Howard lived there. Howard moved to the Pines when he started to get out of the assisted living area in 2003. I last saw Herb at one of the Thursday Men's breakfasts last year sometime. I tried to pick up the tab for Herb and Glenn Albrecht and told them it was on Howard, but they would not let me pay for their breakfast. Herb and Glenn were very good to Howard as Howard's short term memory was failing and he really didn't remember them any more.

My Grandfather will be greatly missed by the many individuals that new him. As bold man that was filled with wisdom, I learned many valuable things over the years from him. Throughout my childhood I spent many weekends at my Grandparents lake place along with my family. Many times my Grandfather voiced his opinion to what I see today as his way as insuring I understood right from wrong, and the important values of life. Year after year he always asked how I, as well as my family (wife, and children) we doing. And he always seemed to have a little something to say or ask, which was his way of checking up on me. May he rest in peace in the heavens above.
My thoughts and prayers go out to my father.
