Herbert Schneider Herbert Schneider, 103, of Reading, passed away Monday, January 18, 2021 in his residence at Manor at Market Square. He was the son of the late Max Schneider and Rose (Goldenberg) Schneider and the husband of the late Shirley (Rekoon) Schneider. Mr. Schneider attended Reading schools and graduated from Reading High School in January 1936, where he was the tennis team champion of the school. He graduated from Drexel Institute of Technology (now Drexel University) in 1940, where he was captain of the tennis team, elected to the Blue Key Honor Society, the Bourse Business Honor Society, and the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society, was on the debating team, winner of the Charles Etting Scholarship, and graduated first in his class in the four-year college of business administration. He served as a first lieutenant in World War II with the Eighth Air Force in England and Scotland and was decorated with the Bronze Star Medal, the Soldier’s Medal, the European Theater Medal, and the Presidential Unit Citation. He was a captain with the 148th Fighter Squadron, Pennsylvania Air National Guard, serving during the Korean War, stationed at Dover Air Force Base. He was general manager of Harold Furniture Stores in Reading and Shillington until his retirement in 1986. Mr. Schneider was a past president of the Reading Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow in that organization. He was a past president of the Shomrei Habrith Synagogue, past commander of the Jewish War Veterans, Abe Golden Post #170, a member of the Reading School Board and the Reading-Muhlenberg Vo-Tech Authority. He was vice-president of the Downtown Merchants Association and belonged to the 148th Fighter Squadron Association and the 351st Bomb Group. Mr. Schneider is survived by his daughters Nancy Nagle, wife of Douglas of Howard, Ohio and Penny Beitman of Harrisburg and his 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Steven Craig Schneider. Graveside service was held privately by the family at Shomre Habrith Cemetery. Rabbi Yosef Lipsker officiated. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the 351st Bomb Group Assoc. c/o Jim Young 167 Lawson Lakes Dr. Clover, SC 29710 or The 148th Fighter Squadron (Raymond Hoffman, Treas.) 381 Boulder Hill Rd. Herb was a wonderful man . My daughter Justine and I used to clean his house for a couple years . Loved his jokes . Miss him very much . Here is a picture of me and my daughter and Herb.
