Herleine Pulley Joyner

SPRING HOPE - Herleine Pulley Joyner, the second oldest of seven children, was born to George Pulley and Sallie Ann Wilkins Pulley on April 23, 1922 in the Peachtree community of Nash County, North Carolina. After graduating Valedictorian from Spaulding High School, Mrs. Joyner began her career during WWII in Philadelphia at the Naval Station. She married William L. Joyner in 1946 and had four children. She continued her career with the Army Electronic Command, and after 1960 worked for the Internal Revenue Service as Head of Accounting until she retired and moved back to North Carolina in 1989. Throughout her time in Philadelphia she was an active member of the Catholic Daughters of Americas; where she was a member for thirty years.

While in North Carolina, she dedicated her time to the Peachtree Community. She was instrumental in the revitalization of Peachtree Community Park. In 1999 Mrs. Joyner received the Governor's Award for outstanding volunteer service in Nash County for her efforts. Additionally, her tenacity and fund raising capabilities enabled her to implement several fitness and safety programs geared towards the community's most vulnerable populations, their children and elders. Furthermore, in the same year, Mrs. Joyner was recognized by the Disabled American Veterans Commander Club for her outstanding devotion and generosity towards America's disabled veterans. Without surprise, in 2003, she founded the Peachtree Community Senior Citizens Group. The Peachtree Community Pavilion was dedicated to her and named in her honor in 2012.

She was preceded in death by three brothers; George Garvey Pulley, James Dorman Pulley, and Thurman Mead Pulley and one sister, Sallie Odessa Wortham. She leaves behind her sister: Bertha Pridgeon and sister-in-law Queene Pulley; four children, Landi E. Penn, William L. Joyner MD, Cassandra E. Plater and Michael A. Joyner; four grandchildren, Elisa L. Penn, Gena K. Lucas, Michael A. Plater II, and A. Pilar Plater; two great grandchildren, Audrey R. Lucas and Adrina K. Lucas as well as a host of relatives and friends.

Sorry to hear of your loss. Death can be so painful for the loved ones left behind. May the God of Peace continue to help you endure the pain 2 Cor. 1: 3-5.

My prayers are with the Joyner family. The belated Mr. Clifford Pulley talked about his sisters all the time. She was very nice and polite when I met her during family gatherings. God Bless.
