Herman "June" Carter

July 25, 1957- June 3, 2025

Herman was born in Gary, Indiana on July 25,1957 to parents Bernice and Herman Carter, Sr. Affectionately known as "June" to his family, he loved his family and hometown dearly. Herman's big personality meant he had no shortage of those who called him "friend". From Ironwood Circle to the Delany Projects, to his beloved Tarrytown neighborhood, Herman connected and grew up with many people who knew and loved him.

Herman was a talented athlete and played several sports during his school years, but it was at West Side High School that his skills became truly evident. He was a key player for his high school's basketball and football team. In high school, Herman met his best friends and forever brothers, Dwayne Wright and Virgil Savage. The trio became inseparable, both on and off the basketball court and football field. Even after high school, Herman remained faithful to his beloved West Side Cougars. He loved his class of '76 and did not miss the opportunity to travel home to attend his high school reunions to reconnect with friends.

Herman's athletic abilities earned him a football scholarship to Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, where he shined on the football field. Herman later transferred to Paine College in Augusta, Georgia to be a part of their basketball team. Upon returning home from college, Herman stayed connected to sports and shared his love of athletics with many as a youth coach.

After college, Herman met Cathy Russell. He and Cathy shared a special relationship, and out of their union, their twins were born. Rashad and RaShaunta Carter were Herman's pride and joy. Herman relocated to Atlanta, GA to begin a new life of opportunities with his family.

Eventually, Herman settled in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he met his longtime companion and friend, Patricia Cage. A talented Carpenter, Herman could use his hands and tools to bring to life most anything from just a concept. He used his skills to make a career in Construction and earned many certifications in the field over the years. As faith would have it, Herman's skills and talent recently landed him in Denver, Colorado, where he was a part of the expansion of the Denver International Airport. Herman was ecstatic at the opportunity to spend quality time bonding with his big sister and Colorado family. He earned multiple awards for safety during his time in Denver and would often share pictures as the project was underway.

Herman loved the Lord, and accepted Jesus as his Lord and savior at an early age. He made sure to find a church home wherever he resided. While in Denver, Herman attended and served at Fresh Hope Church. In his hometown of Baton Rouge, Herman was a long-time member of Oasis Christian Church under the leadership of Bishop Charles E. Wallace, where he sang in the choir. Herman was known for showing up to church dressed to the nines in a new suit every Sunday, looking handsome and suave. Though his body is absent from Earth, the family finds comfort, peace, and joy in knowing his soul is at peace with the Lord.

To the Family...No one can prepare you for a loss; it comes like a swift wind. Have comfort knowing that a person that departs from this earth never truly leaves, for they are still alive in our hearts and minds, through us, they live on. Please accept me and my family's condolences, and know that Herman will be fondly remembered by us in Baton Rouge. God Bless you all.
