Herman Davenport Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 27 to Dec. 30, 2023.
Richland, WA - Herman Doyle Davenport, 84, of Richland, WA, passed away on December 20, 2023. Born on September 26, 1939, in Cordell, Oklahoma, Herman was the beloved husband of Carole Davenport for 62 years.

Herman was a devoted family man and his loved ones meant the world to him. In 1958, he met the love of his life, Carole Davenport, at a track meet in Turlock, CA. Herman graduated from Turlock High School in 1958, they were married in 1960 and enjoyed a loving and fulfilling marriage for 62 years. Together, they raised their daughter Kim and son Kelly. Herman cherished every moment spent with his children and took great pride in attending their sports activities as they grew. He even volunteered as a leader for Kelly's Indian Guides group, where they were affectionately known as "Big-Gun" and "Son-of-Gun".

Herman had a deep passion for sports and was a familiar face at Richland Bomber Football and Basketball games. Even after his son Kelly graduated from Richland High School, he and Carole continued to support the school's sports teams for over 35 years. Their dedication to high school sports extended to his grandchildren as well. He cherished the time spent with his grandson Dillon, who grew up in New Zealand. Despite the distance, Herman stayed involved in Dillon's activities, cheering him on from afar. After Dillon graduated High School, he spent a summer touring the Pacific Northwest in several cycling competitions where the family followed his tour as the loudest fans in the crowd. Herman also treasured attending his granddaughters Jessica and Elizabeth's school activities and sports events. Herman was a loving and intentional grandfather, providing unwavering support and unconditional love.

Outside of family, Herman and Carole were avid golfers and members of the Meadow Springs Country Club. Through their shared love of golf, they formed lasting friendships that brought them joy and support throughout the years. Herman was also known for his sense of humor and storytelling abilities. He had a knack for making people laugh, especially when he laughed at his own jokes.

Herman dedicated 31 years of his career to Chevron Chemical, where he worked as an Operations Service Technician. In 1981, he relocated to Richland due to a transfer with Chevron. After retiring in 1992, he continued working for another 10 years at A&L Supply.

Herman's faith was an important part of his life, and he worshipped at Central United Protestant Church in Richland, WA.

A memorial service for Herman will be held at Central United Protestant Church in Richland, WA, on Saturday, December 27, 2023, at 1:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests considering a donation to the Herman Davenport Memorial Fund at The Richland Bomber Boosters. This fund will support athletes at Richland High School. Donations can be made through VENMO @bomber_boosters or by sending checks payable to Richland Bomber Boosters c/o Richland High School, 930 Long Avenue, Richland, WA 99352.

Herman is survived by his beloved wife Carole Davenport; his son and daughter-in-law, Kelly and Kristi Davenport; his grandchildren, Jessica Judd, Elizabeth Davenport, Dillon and Angela Bennett; and his great-granddaughter, Annabelle Bennett. He was preceded in death by his parents, Myrtle and J.D. Davenport; his sisters, Pauline DeHart and Marie Lee; and his adored daughter, Kim Bennett.

Herman will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering support will live on in the hearts of those he touched.

Herm and I met when we were both transferred to Oregon by Chevron. We always worked hard and played just as hard whether it was golfing with Joe or cutting firewood with Bob. We had a great time and I will always remember Herm fondly.

I met Herman in Fresno California, 1973. I agree with comments below, he was a likeable cuss. We became close due to his love of golf. I had played maybe three times before we started playing every Saturday morning. Just a few short years later, it was Herm, Bill Bienapfl, and myself. What a great time it was and how much I looked forward to our outings.
I will miss my friend and thank God for placing me in Herm´s life.
My condolences to Carole and family.

So sorry Carole, Kelly and his family to read of Herman's passing. He was a
character that Larry and I both enjoyed being around. A great guy and friend, on and off the golf course and travel companion. We enjoyed our cruise and eating dungeness crab on Christmas eve.

The first time I met Herman, he asked me my name and said, "You aren´t the girl that was here with Kelly last night!" He loved to poke fun.
Herman greeted everyone with a positive attitude. He was delighted to see everyone he met and made you believe today was the best day ever. I loved listening to his stories and watching him with his son debating and discussing. He seemed to love a challenge and in depth conversation.
I will miss his little comments that I pray will stay in my mind: "Hey Kid, Alright!, Good Show" just to name a few. He will be missed immensely. We love you Herm, can´t wait to meet you again in Heaven.
1 Thess 4:13-14 "And now, dear brothers and sisters, we want you to know what will happen to the believers who have died so you will not grieve like people who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and was raised to life again, we also believe that when Jesus returns, God will bring back with him the believers who have died." Romans 10:9 "If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."

Herman always met me with a giant hug and a huge smile on his face. I will always remember the warmth he brought with just his presence. And his incredible skill of making everyone feel SO cared about. He had the memory of an elephant and could remember the smallest details I would tell him the last time I saw him. And he always was so excited to hear about what was new since the last time. He will be dearly missed and I know he is cheering all of his loved ones on with Kim under his arm
