Holly Devers Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 7 to Jan. 9, 2016.
Holly Jo Peters Devers

Holly planned to write this obituary, but transplant rejection progressed too rapidly. She passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 3, 2016, in Memphis, TN. Born February 7, 1975 in Aransas Pass, Texas, she is survived by her beloved daughters, Chloe' Romano, Carolyne Sheppelman, and Kathryn Devers, and her parents, Keith and Vickie Peters of Atoka, TN. She leaves her devoted sister, Polly "DeeDee Kennedy, brother-in-law James, and nephews Evan, Christian, Aidan, and Addison of Millington, TN. She is the granddaughter of Paul and Carolyn Hankins of Rosewood, KY, and was preceded in death by grandparents Ed and Helene Peter. She is survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends.

Holly grew up in Mooringsport and graduated from Northwood High. She proudly served in the U.S. Navy, but gladly took early discharge when her ship was decommissioned. Holly worked in retail sales, perfect for one who loved fashion and bargains. She had a talent for selecting flattering styles for others, although not all her daughters shared her love of monograms and enormous bows.

She was sweet and generous, but had a biting wit and wicked sense of humor. Holly believed in the goodness of others. Acquaintances and strangers helped her many times, usually with a ride, even to both transplants. She made friends anywhere she went, and maintained those relationships. Holly's friendship also included her advice on love, fashion, and career choices. She had a gift for decorating on a dime, dumpster diving, and repurposing. She never threw anything away, purchased bargains in multiples, and gave thoughtful gifts that were exactly what we didn't know we wanted, if she remembered where she hid it. She believed in celebrating special occasions, and hosted elaborate parties for birthdays, engagements, weddings, and babies. She would have planned her memorial service with a bit more time. We hope it meets her expectations.

She sailed through life on a wing and a prayer, always with faith and hope for the future. After her diagnosis of a rare lung disease in 2009, she became a fierce warrior fighting for her life, her daughters, and her family. In 2010, she received a double lung transplant, and after rejection, received a single transplant in 2013. She learned she was not a candidate for a third transplant on November 30. Holly's determination, courage, and grace especially impressed those who met her after her diagnosis of LAM.

The world was more beautiful with Holly in it, and ours will be dim without her sparkle.

We thank the two donor families who gave us five more precious years. We also thank the transplant doctors and staff at Houston Methodist for caring for Holly, professionally and personally.

Please join us at a memorial service at Grace Community Church, 9500 Ellerbe Road, Shreveport, LA on Saturday, January 9, at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the charity of your choice or the LAM Foundation in her honor, http://thelamfoundation.org, and register as an organ donor.

Holly affectionately called me "Mama Ford" during our time in the Navy as I was much older. We reconnected after her diagnosis and I drove to Louisiana from Illinois to see her. We had the most amazing time and I met her girls. May the love of friends and family carry you through your grief.

I met Holly in the Navy and became "Momma Ford" & yes I felt very protective and motherly. When I spoke to Holly prior to her first transplant, I instantly drove from Illinois to Louisiana. There was not a second thought. I'm so glad I have another Angel to watch over me! May the family take comfort in knowing how loved she will always be to those who knew her.

On behalf of Louisiana Women Veterans, we would like to extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family of Ms. Holly Jo Devers, U.S. Navy Veteran. Here is a poem that we honor our women of military with at their passing:

She is a woman veteran
Whose service was true
She proudly served
The Red, White and Blue

She gave a part of her life
So others could be free
And without any hesitation
She joined unselfishly

She did her job well
With Honor and Pride
And served her great country
With the men alongside

We're proud today to know
That although she is gone
She goes on to glory
After a job "well done!"

And so, "Our Dear Sister"
We salute you today,
A special sailor laid to rest
In this quiet, solemn way.

I had the honor of being a dance mom with her a few years back. Our girls took dance together at Susan's . She was the fun mom I looked forward to catching up with each week. She always had her hands full with those beautiful girls. The youngest was quite an entertainer as I remember. So sad to hear of this loss.. Praying for her girls and hoping our paths cross again so I can hug them!

You've left behind all earthly things
Though hearts are heavy they're full of love
And know you're looking down from above

God rest you Holly Jo

I met Holly when we worked together in Shreveport as Landmen. We had numerous dinners at her house and even had her at ours for a weekend in Baton Rouge. She was such a sweet person and always a ton of fun to be around. She will be greatly missed. Prayers go out to her three girls who she loved so much and her family.

My deepest condolences to the Devers family. During difficult times like these I like to keep in mind what is promised to us by Jehovah our God at Ezekiel 34:16 "The lost one I will search for, the stray I will bring back, the injured I will bandage." Any of the pain we feel, Jehovah God promises to bandage and help us be okay.

I am so sorry to hear this about Holly. When I babysat her as a little girl, I could tell she would grow up to have a huge heart full of compassion for others . As I read all the other messages, I can see that is true. I know you will all miss her terribly. May you be comforted in your time of grief in knowing you will be together again. Much love sent your way.

Holly was the retail clerk that you visited with while you shopped and caught up years later when you ran into her elsewhere. Few people are blessed with such a wonderful personality. My day was always made better by her big smile and kind ways. I offer my sincerest condolences to her family. She was a precious person and she will be missed. Praying for her family.
