Rhodes, Holly Palmer.
She was loved deeply by her family and friends. She passed away on November 11, 2012 at Grady Memorial Hospital with her husband Will by her side after suffering a severe injury in a fall at home. As always Holly writes about her life better than anyone else could. We share with you below some of her self-reflections.

World Enough and time
Now that my nest is empty, long latent gifts seek expression.
Education
Lingate Swim Club, In retrospect, everything I ever needed to know
University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Bachelor of Arts in English and Religion, 1982
Emory University, Candler School of Theology Master of Theological Studies, 1999, Magna Cum Laude
Songs of innocence
Played school with an imaginary class of children. I populated my class with children with monosyllabic Anglo-Saxon surnames—Smith, Jones, etc. It was a different time. Set up an employment agency in my nightstand drawer with cast off IBM computer cards and a lending library in my basement. A prodigy of organization. Was a friend to Corrine and Cordia Bonney, the shabby, rail thin poor twins no one else talked to. Was a friend to Betty Buckner who developed early and was threatening to all flat-chested girls. Was a friend to George Cotner until he got the wrong idea. Everyone liked me.
Songs of experience
Lingate Swim Club. See above.
1982-1987 Inter Varsity Christian Fellowship Staff (Boston: Harvard, Brown, Bunker Hill Community College; Atlanta: Emory and University of Georgia) Worked with and for Black People. Learned firsthand—painfully, joyfully—about race.
1987 Became a Jane Austen devotee. Bought her CD and her videos. Went to Breadloaf Writers Conference and discovered I can write a sentence but not a story. Mad crush on Nicholas Delbanco.
1988-1993 Added three to the madding crowd.
1993-present Diffident forays into the preparation of various cuts of meat and other miracles of housewifery. Read all the Booker Prize books, the breadth (and depth where there was affinity) of Nobel laureates, National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize winners. Dickens, a second run through the Bronte sisters, the James brothers, and the Russians, sundry poems, Kierkegaard, Kafka, Weil (again and again), etc. Lolita. Hmmm. Traveled the dim pathways of the human psyche with these bright lights.
1999 Graduated from Candler School of Theology. Wrote a 20 page paper at one end of the dining room table; sewed Halloween costumes at the other. Dinner twice a week at Los Bravos. Held on to my faith by a thread; after all, Nietzsche had a point.
2000 ff. Undertook the sport of rowing. Discovered I’m a natural. Old dog; new tricks. Won the Georgia Games and competed respectably in the Masters Nationals.
2003 Visited Rome and was uninspired by the many beautiful churches. Went to the apartment where Keats died and had a religious experience.
2008 Taught a class on Wine and Jesus for The Atlanta Wine School.
2009-present Substitute teaching at The Lovett School including a ten week stint in the august company of Ulysses and Holden Caulfield with 31 lucky freshmen.
2011 Undertook the reading of Ulysses in the merry company of five like-minded fellows well fortified with Irish stout.
1987-present I’ve been out there mixing it up in a world gone awry—exercising valuable leadership with non-profits and giving as I’ve been given. Three years tutoring kids at Scottish Rite. Three non-profit boards (presently serving): Hands on Atlanta, Sanders/Buckhead YMCA, Global Partners for Development. Five years teaching Sunday school to kids who wanted to be elsewhere. Five years ushering at the Shakespeare Festival. Thirty five hundred+ miles on Bike Ride Across Georgia (five trips) and the Underground Railroad route with the Dream Team, inner-city middle and high school students. Eight years of dedicated service to the homeless and addicted at Café 458. $35,000+ raised for the YMCA Partner With Youth, Buckhead YMCA Volunteer of the Year. Innumerable glasses of milk spilled and wine consumed. Mostly, I was just a good mom. Almost everyone likes me.
To celebrate her life a service will be held at 10 o'clock in the morning on Saturday, November 17, 2012 at
St. Patrick's Episcopal Church

I, too, had not seen Holly since Kirkwood. We went to North Kirkwood Junior High together. We became good friends, the cheerleader befriending the geek. After 9th grade, I moved to Tulsa, and she later moved to Macon. We wrote to each other throughout High School, and then I lost contact with her when she went to UNC.
Over the last few years, I would occasionally try to search for her on the internet, wondering where she had gone with her life. I always figured she had lived life to the fullest in a truly unique Chistian manner, as that is how I knew her so long ago.
Sadly, I only found her today through her passing and the obituaries and memorials since.
From everything I have read, she was the same kind, giving, light-up-the-room Holly I knew back then.
My condolences to her family and all that knew and loved her. I cannot begin to imagine your loss, but I can imagine the joy she brought to all of you.

My friends, the Palmers. I haven't seen you in so many years, yet you remain as close to my heart as ever. I learned of Holly's passing in a letter from Lisa. I am devastated, as you are. A lot can be handled with a strong family and great faith. You are in my heart and prayers. I know that you can feel her presence. I love and miss you.

Dear Nick:
I am heart broken to hear of your mother's sudden passing. Nick, I only met your mum the one time, at your graduation. I was sitting in the second row of "Irvine" waiting ...saving seats for my family and this breathtakingly beautiful blonde woman walks past me...in a red sleeveless dress with matching pearl ear rings and necklace....a radiant smile on her face...I thought to myself " wow...she looks like an "angel " ! ....that was honestly my gut reaction....then you walked in behind her and I realized ..."this is Nick's mum!!!"......
As soon as we realized that our sons were close friends...we moved seats so that we could sit with each other and talk.....we had a good 30 minutes before the programme started. We talked about how you and Arjun were...fraternity brothers...and had lived together for the past 3 years....how wonderful it was that the two of you would be working together at Morgan Stanley after graduation AND would be living together in NYC! Holly was so relieved that I lived in New York and that I would be your "go to person" should you need something.....to which I "promised" her I would be your "NYC Mum" ....those were the exact words I said to her Nick....Your mother hugged me so hard recognizing that we shared that same "mommy quality"....I was so happy to meet her...we agreed that we would meet when she next came up to NYC...I KNEW this was a person I was going to be friends with for a long, long time....I already felt like we were old friends...in just 30 minutes.
When Arjun called me and told me what happened ....my first thought went to you, Nick. I prayed for you...I prayed hard and asked God to give you and your family strength to deal with this deep loss. I came to your apartment building and sat on the stoop and cried.
It just doesn't seem fair ...so not fair BUT my faith is the only thing that makes any sense of this...and I believe that God chose this time for Holly, his angel, to join him.
I will keep my promise to your mother. I am here should you need help, a home cooked meal or just someone to sit and cry with. I am here for you, Nick. Love Mrs. P.
To the Rhodes Family
Deepest condolences for your loss. The Pai Family has you all in their prayers.

I have not seen Holly for almost thirty years, but she remains one of my fondest memories from Kirkwood, Missouri.
She was so intelligent, so thoughtful, so fun-probably the best friend I have ever/will ever have.
I always thought-in the back of my mind- that I would get together with her again, somehow.
I am sure that her husband/kids/friends know how fabulous she was, and I am truly sorry for your loss. Please don't hesitate to contact me if any of you are EVER in Minnesota.

I've never known such an inquisitive thinker and great athlete with such humility and selflessness as "Hollace", as a dear friend used to call her.
I haven't seen Holly for 30 years, but her spirituality and virtue have influenced my life disproportionately to our times together in grade school, junior high, and high school. Holly was rightly proud of meeting her challenges and achieving her successes, but she got far more genuine satisfaction from affecting even the minor accomplishments of the others in her life.
Our loss is heaven's gain. My best to her family. Your mother/wife/sister/daughter/friend affected more lives than any of us will ever know.

My heart breaks for all of you that knew and loved Holly, most especially Will, Anna, Nick and Peter. Holly was a part of my childhood just like I was a part of her children's. The Rhodes had the best climbing tree in the neighborhood. Despite the many times Holly drove up the driveway to find the tree full of children, she always greeted us with a wave and a smile. When I was a little older, I babysat for all of the Rhodes children for years. When I think of Holly during the years her children were small, I think of her reading Pippi Longstocking to Nick, driving Anna to gymnastics faithfully, and playing with Peter on the corn table. I always admired her, not only for the great mom she was, but for her kind heart and dedication to others. She talked to me like an adult when I wanted nothing more than to be treated like one and allowed me to be a child until I outgrew climbing trees.
She was an amazing person, and I am a better person for having known her. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.

Mrs. Holly,
I'm so grateful and fortunate to have met you and your family 19 years ago. I still don't want to believe what has happened. For as long as I knew you, I never considered you as my boss but as my best friend. It's going to be so hard to get out of my routine of coming to see you on Mondays. I'm just so heartbroken to lose my friend. I will miss your smile, hugs, and kisses and calling me “Doracita” and always reminding me of how much you loved me every chance you could. Mr. Will, Anna, Nicholas, and Peter- I love you all so very much. I will always have your family in my heart.

Dear Will and family, I am stunned and grieved by this news. I've been flooded with memories of our days running summer camps in Grant Park some 25-30 years ago together. Holly's keen intellect and sense of humor deeply impacted my view of the world and my faith. I consider her among my favorite life-mentors. I am so sorry for your loss and will be holding you all close in my heart and prayers.

Will - I was so stunned to hear the news and it triggered so many memories. I remember having Anna and Nicholas in Sunday School, and being at Peter's baptism, and the funny story Holly told about meeting your parents on Pentecost Sunday when they were dressed as bumblebees. Discovering a few years ago that I was working with your sister in CT led to more reminiscing. Holly will leave such a big hole in so many lives. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Will, my family and I send our condolences. Holly was the best of the best. The lost of Holly is comparable to me losing a family member. You and Holly were the role model couple.
