Honor GRIFFITH

HONOR GRIFFITH October 8, 1946 - January 24, 2022 Honor Griffith was a handful, proudly, to all who met her. A fierce and stubborn individualist, she lived on her own terms, and liked nothing less than being told what to do or think. Her favorite stories were of defying authority. As a teenager, she was once slapped by a teacher, only to stand up, calmly walk out of the classroom and the school and refuse to return until he apologized. He did. After her first daughter was born, Honor learned that a sexist law required parents who wished to hyphenate their child's name to order them father's first. She had the law repealed. A woman of many skills and talents, her career included work as a film editor (for which she won a Genie in 1976), caterer, and property manager. She could diagnose your furnace while making a perfect soufflé. She had a way with all green things, and lived surrounded by thriving plants. An excellent cook and generous host for much of her life, Honor threw raucous, drunken, epicurean dinner parties beloved by all, excluding neighbors. In her retirement, she moved to the countryside, king of her own wild patch of land near Grafton, Ontario, where she became something of a hermit. Her property was large enough, and far enough from neighbors, that she could play the stereo (Dire Straits, Neil Young) at her desired volume. She is survived by daughters Megan Griffith-Greene and Alexis De Castro, sons-in-law Jeromey Lloyd and Ryan De Castro, grandchildren Myles, Ben, and Samantha De Castro, sister Julie Griffith and brother-in-law Donnie Evans, and nephew Thomas Sutherland. There will not be a funeral at this time. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity that Honor loved, Indspire, at indspire.ca, or to the Northumberland Hills Hospital, where she spent her final months, and where the nurses cared for her like family.
